ST Naked

I'm pretty certain i'll be picking up a used ST 2 or 3 soon.

BUT... i'm wondering if anyone has done a half fairing version. or even a monster-version.

I would love to take off the side fairings and maybe the underseat fairings to show more frame and motor, but keep the front and windscreen for touring protection. or maybe create a slice fairing, kinda just the barge boards of the 999 without the rest of the bodywork.

If anyone has seen this or done this with an ST could you post some pics and ideas.
I know for sure i will have to move the battery. I'm downloading the parts catalog to see what else can be moved around.

I don't want to spend any on this bike, just modify what i can on my own. saving all my cash for the Monster rebuild.

that's kinda what i want to do minus the SSS and high exhausts. he has some shorty side finishing panels under the front fairing. i like that clean look but maybe was thinking going just below the radiator more like the old short SS fairings. also i wonder where he put the battery and coils.

looks like a monster seat on there. gives me an idea to try the DP comfort seat i have from the 696. I'll have to dig deeper to see where he hid all the extra stuff.

I've got a 1998 ST2 and have long thought exactly the same -- Thanks, DesmoDiva for posting those pix!!!

I've got the lower & mid fairings off mine right now and will take some pictures tomorrow (won't be home before dark today) -- the main items you'd have to deal with to make it look right are:

Right Side: Battery is big & ugly, and I don't see a good spot to relocate it without some substantial fabrication. About half coolant tank pokes down below the top fairing, though it should be easy to trim the middle fairing (as appears to have been done on the pictured ST) to cover it and make it look good.

Left Side: Charcoal Canister (easy), and a pretty thick mess of coolant hoses that'd need to be re-routed.

Good luck -- and maybe if I can get the electrics sorted (the reason I've got it stripped at the moment) I can think beyond just keeping mine running.

for the battery i was thinking about moving it under the seat. possibly one of the smaller gel cells. or moving it up front in the fairing. as far as the fairing. i was goign to try and find a wrecked mid fairing to chop. i also have a friend who does CF. maybe he can pull a mold from the mid and we can reshape the CF one. if we make it long enough i could keep the battery on the side, just a bit higher

How much room is under the tank? Would a battery braket from a Monster work there?

from what i've read ( i don't have the bike yet to check) you need to use a Monster or SS airbox to do that.

OR, get one of those SpeedCell batteries. You can fit it in your sock (while you are wearing it), and its a colossal weight savings.


I have a much smaller than stock battery on my Monster. I can't remember which Yuasa, but after the factory sized battery spewed acid onto my pants, frame & engine alt cover (leaving pock marks in the paint reminiscent of a kid with acne's face), I decided to get a sealed battery. The smaller battery has no trouble turning over my carb'd 900.

OK, took some pictures of the 2001 M600 Monster and 1998 ST2 and hauled out the measuring tape. Here's what I think would be the issues:

Battery Relocation:

Monster airbox (stock) & Battery tray are 9" wide by about 13" long; the square section of the ST airbox is 9" wide by about 11" long, though it extends a bit into the front triangle of the frame. Pix of the Monster airbox:

The bigger issue might be the indentation at the bottom of the tank; Monster has a big cutout for the airbox and battery, while the ST tank has an extra bulge outward where the Monster Battery lives. Monster Tank:

Fitting the battery under the tank would probably be a whole lot easier if the airbox was converted to pods, which would get a whole lot of additional room under there.

It's pictured there with the stock battery size in place, though it's usually got an Odyssey PC680 in there (long story) which is smaller than the stock ST one, but bigger by about an inch in height & length, and a half inch wider than the Yuasa in the Monster. Maybe it's just the issues I'm having with the charging system, but I'd be leery of going with a battery with less capacity than stock, at least in a 1998.
