the DD214 request is online now.
Really? I have been looking for a way to get my long copy for the past few years- lost JUST that copy, probably when I was trying to get something in/for college. I'll have to give it a look

About the DD214-When you seperate, they should give you several originals. I think they have seven of them. They (VA) gives you 4 or 5 and a the others get sent to different places. I know one place is in Tenn, I think one in DC, and who knows the rest. I seperated for a year and came back in and have a bunch of the originals and remember them telling me all this stuff.

I did it online and several weeks later I got a CD. to get into it you have to put in a messed up password that has to do with your date of birth and service entry date and some other thing. anyway it didn't work. So I said to hell with it.

i knew someone who put their original DD214 to a safety deposit Box and had some arrangement to get certified copies of it.

the records for someone else requires items like death certificates etc to prove someone is deceased. also, depends on his records. there was a fire in St. Lous a number of years back that destroyed most of the records and the subsequent mess after makes it hard to find older records.

I tried to get my grandfather's records (Bataan survivor) and didn't need a death cert, but his records were destroyed in the same fire. I was pretty disappointed.

I've been using a tattered old non-certified "Xerox" copy of my DD-214 for years and no one has ever questioned or challenged it.  I remember the warning "Don't lose this!" when I got out, but somehow I don't know what happened to the original.
