The steering damper can stay where it is - it's mounted on the bar clamp right? Maybe you'll need a few spacers/washers to fill in the tiny gap which the stock bars was.
I can't educate you with every little detail, but I can give you one or two essentials.
Clip ons provide new angles for your wrists - added sweep angle and down angle. Hold your hands in front of you and see how the new angles change your elbows and shoulders. Then you'll know how much change you want. The more you get, the more your body position will be like a superbike position. Riser height of the clip ons plays an important role in this too.
The SpeedyMoto Tall Boys will put the grips at about stock height. That's not very low and doesn't require a radical sweep back (which they BTW don't allow).
The Swatt 3.5" riser clip ons will put the grips about two inches lower than stock. Another inch for the 2.5" riser model. MotoWheels have the 2.5" in stock. The 3.5" is hard to find, from what I've heard.
Clip ons with little or no rise are very different from stock and you would have to be reasonably sure about such a change before making it. I'm happy with my Swatt 3.5" and I'm thinking of lowering them, but it did take some getting used to.
