Record player problems.

So I got a new belt for my turntable the other day which i haven't used for years. Put the new belt in, hooked it all up and all I could hear was sound coming out of one speaker (barely) with the volume turned up to 11 

The player is probably 25 years old (it's a CDC whatever that is) and I've hooked it up to my Rotel. Would I need a new needle as well?



Any help out there?

Don't know mate, haven't spun a record since I was about 10 or 12.

Possibly a dumb question, but you've hooked it up to the PHONO jacks, yeah?  Turntables put out a very weak signal that needs either a pre-amp (for normal inputs) or a special phono input that does this additional amplification.  Otherwise what you get will be VERY quiet, and probably distorted as well.

The single-channel output could be a side effect of this, or it could indicate bad cables (or, as you suggest, a bad needle.  Or any of a million other things, really...)

Like NFG said, and also like the problem that afflicts Ducatis fairly frequently is corroded terminals/contacts. Like the little tackers that are usually on the needle pickup head?? 

And even the jacks, particularly the female sockets. 

When I pulled my guitar amp out after a year or so, all the jacks had a fine coating of corrosion and did not work very well, if at all.

I hope Big doesn't read that, I think he is a bit of a vinyl junkie. I just have a big box full of LP's that need to be spun. And geez, there were some corkers in there. Nothing like your typical Grandma pan flute love songs, Demis Roussos or Nana Maskouri records, but there were some moments where I thought "Did I actually buy that?" 

I guess I will check my connections and give it a clean.

And yes, it was in the phono jack.

My modern stereo doesn't have a phono jack, but it plays my laserdiscs, minidiscs and Super Nintendo just fine.  =D

Maybe it was a mono belt........


You probably bumped something while fitting the belt. I'd pull off the cartridge, reseat it and set it up again. Do you have a manual for it? I just checked Vinyl Engine and they don't have the CDC brand listed
