Maybe I'm not very trusting, but everyone frightens me on the road. The U.S. doesn't do a very good job of teaching people to really drive beyond reading road signs and using the standard accoutrement on a vehicle.
Agreed. Although it would never happen, I think most drivers would benefit from taking the MSF course and getting their motorcycle license.

My own experience points to women as being more inattentive. I think I've been involved in 6 accidents. In all but one of them the woman driving was cited. This includes turning left in front of my Monte Carlo, turning right across the nose of my mom's Camry, changing lanes on the interstate during a snowstorm into my Passat front bumper, rear ending my S4R at a stoplight, and I don't even remember the others.
But none of em were Korean!
I definitely see a lot more female drivers on the cell phones, sending text messages and generally make the beast with two backsing about.
All car manufacturers need to install cell phone blocking devices that activate if the car is moving more than 5mph.

The San Francisco Municipal Railway finds that their women drivers have a much lower accident rate than the male drivers.
I was just going to say something about the asian drivers. I'm always more careful when driving through China town. They seem to have a whole different philosophy about moving around and it doesn't mesh well with native drivers.

-Asian Women should be required to take the same classes as a Secret Service driver.
-Jewish Men should have a memory of them side swiping and kill people implanted so they never try to pass in the most retarded situations.
-Black Women should NOT be allowed to drive SUVs because they DO NOT care what they run over. Even if its a body.
Thats the top 3 for me.

gotta say, my top list for terrible drivers
1) grey hair, wrinkles, cant see
over the dash
past the steering wheel
2) teens...regardless of plumbing (although the aggressive vs. inattentive applies well to gender in this group)
3) professional drivers (OTR types) who should really just know better.

The Official Numbers
According to TrafficSTATS, a risk analysis study by Carnegie Mellon for AAA in 2007, men have a 77% higher risk of dying in an accident compared to women. The study, using information from both the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the National Household Travel Survey estimated fatalities per 100 million trips to be 14.61 for men and 6.53 for women. The total number of fatalities between 1999 and 2005 were 175,094 for men and 82,371 women.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 14,512 male drivers died in 2007 compared to 5,865 female drivers, and even though there tend to be more male drivers on the road than females, the numbers strongly support the TrafficSTATS report.
That's interesting, but not getting a ticket is not the definition of a good driver to me. I
will be god damned if I will
am loath to accept the insurance industry's definition either.
But to address some of these points, men rarely get out of tickets for crying. Case in point: recently, my wife and I got tickets within a day of each other for expired registration. She also ran a stop sign, and didn't have a recent insurance card on her.
I got pulled over for one of HPDs monthly fundraising efforts, for going the same exact speed as everyone else around me. I was cited for an array of things, including an infraction called "cracked winshield", which the officer could not be distracted from his fundraiser long enough to explain to me. My wife was given a warning. Didn't even have to cry.
Also, for that fatality rate info to be meaningful, we would have to know the circumstances - so, are male drivers killing themselves, does this count include passengers, who was at fault? I think the intended audience of this study are the actuaries at the insurance companies who then take it, and add a 10% premium to men's insurance policies because they are more likely to die.
I think it would be fairly accurate to say that men tend to be more capable drivers that do stupid things more often, and women may not ever be as comfortable behind a wheel, but also drive like they aren't.

I don't know, I have been a professional racing instructor for several years and from my experience it has been about the same between bad men drivers and bad women drivers.....
Taken From Car-Accidents.com.....
Men are more than twice as likely to die in a car crash than women, consider the yearly statistics shown below. In fact, studies have shown as many as 73 percent of all people killed in car accidents are male. Since record keeping began: male fatalities significantly outweigh female fatalities. However men and women do not drive the same number of miles under the same conditions- men do about 60-65% more driving than women. Studies show that woman take shorter trips and
female drivers have a greater number of minor crashes than do men
. However men are still 70% more likely to be in a serious crash.
Car Crash Stats:
Persons Killed, by Sex: Male, Female in 2006
Male Drivers Killed Female Drivers Killed
29,722 12,747
Total Both Sexes: 42,469
173 Drivers Unknown Sex Not Included
What accounts for this disparity?
Some researchers believe the explanation is to be found hormones related to aggessiveness, others put more emphasis on data such as the measurebly greater alcohol use among men while driving.
What scares me is the unknown sex?

I've known far more men to get into accidents than women.
That must prove that men are more accident prone!
Stupid male drivers....

men do about 60-65% more driving than women.
So the fatalities break down to 70/30, men/women. But if men are driving >70% of the time (I am not sure how they are calculating total trips, but 65% of 50% is greater than 70%), then that seems to say women are actually more likely to be in a fatal crash when driving, but they are dying less often (as a percentage of total trips) since they don't drive as often.
As for unknown sex, I hope that is not because they couldn't identify the remains...blech.

I've known more men who were in serious wrecks, even single-vehicle. We're more likely to drive fast/take chances and end up seriously injured or dead.
Most of the women I know have been in at least one minor accident (parking lot speeds, or thereabouts) that they either didn't report, of refuse to admit was their own fault. ("The person backing out of the spot has the right of way, dammit!")
As far as insurance is concerned, I wouldn't trust their numbers without clarifying details. I had a professor in college who got dropped by his insurance company for being too "high risk." He filed 3 claims in the span of 2 calendar years.
1) His wife's car got hit while parked.
2) His daughter's car died on the highway and he used his insurance company's roadside assistance plan.
3) A tree limb fell on his car while it was parked in his driveway.
For filing so many claims in such a short time, he was classified as "high risk" and dropped. He's a tea-totaler with a PhD in accounting. He's not what I would call a "risk taker."

I think insurance companies believe that men (especially through the mid to late 20's or early 30's) are fueled by testosterone and ego and they base statistics and rates on that. We also see many more male riders than female riders - another place where ego can take over.

Someone needs to add a poll to this thread
Women or Men are worse Drivers
Women or Men are worse Riders
As far me what I have noticed using work as a small case study since I ride with many different people for lunch time runs it seems like if you were not born here your driving skill becomes increasingly worse.
But I do have to admit I have been with more women that there driving scares the shit out of me than men but I cant come to any conclusion with out a larger sampling I would say.
