My mom says I'm a catch.

« on: October 18, 2009, 01:11:18 PM »

It's a friends 83 S. He's had it since 95 or so. Very well cared for. Here's some info...

4.7 5spd
140,000 mi
engine rebuilt @ 105,000
guards red, excellent quality respray 7 yrs ago, still looks fantastic
H4's, GTS wing
17" cup wheels (also comes with 18" turbo wheels)
almost pristene black leather interior
short shifter mod done
stock airbox, k&n, GTS style intake tubes (no restriction)
some exhaust work done, cat back I think

He started messing with the water pump and now it leaks. (he's not a mechanically inclined person)
I think there might be an A/C issue but the important stuff is fine from what I remember (Compressor, dryer, condenser etc.)
Runs great otherwise.

I can have it for 2 grand.

I am very mechanically inclined but was just making sure I'm not getting in over my head. I know how expensive parts are.  Shocked

Also what else can be done performance wise with the 83 motor? She's a strong runner and rumored to be euro spec, but I can't confirm what heads and cams it has at the moment.

Thanks for any input from all!  waytogo

The 928 is close to my heart. Parts are $$$$ and if you have someone to work on it you better have lots of $$$$ to throw away!!!

The torque tube is very expensive to repair. Make sure there is no humming from the drive line.

As far as motor upgrades... A stroker kit.  A RMB is nice too. (remote muffler bypass)

I'll post up some for info when I get to my computer. I'm on my phone now.

I will also add that it will be difficult to find a mechanic who knows the 928. I was lucky in the Boston area to have 2 great garages 20 minutes from my house.

Ahh, the 928. It will always inhabit a warm place in my heart right next to Rebecca De Mornay.

The euro spec 83 5 speed  I believe had about 300 ponies so its got some good power.  If it is a euro the VIN would look like this WPO ZZZ 92 DS 8 6xxx  Where ZZZ is designates a euro spec.  If its JAO that would be USA spec which put out about 240hp.

I'm going from memory here....  I was big into the 928 until I replaced it with something that really drove me into the poor house.

There is a local guy but I plan on doing most everything myself. Car comes with the multi-volume factory manual set.  waytogo

I'll check the vin. It doesn't look like a euro model but we thought maybe upgraded to euro cams/heads. I will have to investigate.
I wonder if there are different casting numbers? I'm sure the cams will have a part # but that requires some disassembly.

Was up in Wisconsin a few months back and had a 928S blow by me...I tried to hang with him just for the beautiful noise coming from the exhaust pipe. Not my top choice on looks but one of my top 20s in sound...

DOH!!!!  Dango 928's. We don't work on many these days unless they are really clean.  Waterpump is driven by the timing belt and isn't that bad if you figure out what yer doing.  AC can be a nightmare because everything is vacuum controled and way up under the dash. But it is fixable. Powersteering racks are notorious for leaks and are pricey.  As you said, you know what your getting into. When those cars are running they are great. They were designed to cross countries very comfortably at 150mph all day long.  Let me know what you do. I'm open to pm's if needed.

I wasn't sure if ducaholic was old enough to have worked on any 928s. Grin

Oh shit here we go.  Dango snipperwapper working on the old cars.  I'm older than I will let you know Nate.  In fact my 914 is only a couple a years older than me.  I hear you and dirt are about the same vintage. Grin

Any way to tweak the old school L-Jetronic fuel injection?

I don't believe there are any performance chips or the like available.
