how the lower triple should look

I ground the forging/casting marks off the lower triple in prep for some black powder coat and thought I would share.  It took about an hour.

120 grit flap disc - perfect for removal. Fast and the sanding scratches weren't too deep
220 grit random orbit sander
1500 grit hand wet sand to remove scratch marks (400 would have been fine, but I didn't have any)

did the same, i think i finished mine with 220, once powder coated there were no marks. If you hit it with 1200 (and it looks great) why not just clear it, or leave it? Prolly a stupid question since i figure you are looking for the dark side of finishes for your ride.

If you are going for a different color, you could always think about upgrading!

I've always wanted to improve the lower triple. I have at long last found a solution for such:

Your other option for the 02+ bikes is the speedymoto unit, but i do not want to shell out that kind of jingle, at this time.

I am going for the darkness.  Having just got back from my powder coater, he said the same thing.  By the time he gets done media blasting, 220 scratches are gone.

Nice!  I thought about the polished look........but it won't work with dark look.

I'm in the midst of working out details on a set for my 1999 Monster 900, which uses a different steering stem than what is on the 02+ Monsters. (They have accommodations for both).

They'll do different diameters for your forks as well, such as 50/54 (OEM), 53/53 (Showa SBK), and 53/56 (Ohlins SBK). One Caveat, if you have a trick CycleCat top triple, on an older gen Monster (pre-02) with the narrow steering stem, then you'll lose the ability to keep that sucka. The triple trees are 30mm offsets, same as the 02+ OEM offset size, which is a difference from what seems to be a 25mm offset on the pre-02 bikes. This should lead to a more stable feeling, but a little more reluctance in initiating the turn-in. This looks like it can be easily compensated for, if one desired, by raising the rear ride height.

For the 02+ Monster Owners, the offset is the same as factory, so you could order just the lower and use your CycleCat or SpeedyMoto top triple and go about your business. Their top triples look gooood, though aren't all skeletal, so you might still want to order a complete set. Really a great idea for those guys that are sticking with a single bar, rather than going to clip-ons (aka half-handlebars, as they refer to them).

I'll post up much much more about my dealings with the company after I send payment (this week) and receive product (very shortly thereafter)
