S2R1000 24,000KM SERVICE COST

Good Day Guys,

I have been at the Dealer and asked for a quote regarding my impending 24,000 km ( 15,000 miles) service...
it sounds like an expensive one as they asked me 470 euros (705 USD)....I agree that there are many works to do but it is really much for my pockets.
And if you add chain, brake pads etc...the amount could be even higher..
I have still 6 months of warranty so be on the safe side I can't turn to an Independent Garage but for the future I think it will be the best option.

Service does not have to be performed by the dealer to maintain warranty.

Did he provide an itemized list of what will be done? It's hard to say w/o a better feel for what work will be performed.

Someone was on the board asking a very similar question a little while back. At first blush, the price seemed high - but he asked for an itemized summary of what was included for that price, and with those details the price was right on spec, if not a pretty good deal.

Also, you can always ask them not to perform some items. For example, if flushing the brake lines is on there of 50E (just making this up mind you) - and you feel confident in your ability to do that work yourself, you can just ask they not do it.. and save yourself the labor charge. This way, you can eleminate some of the mechanically simple, but time consuming (aka costly) elements from the service.

I bought my S2R 800 used with 15K miles and it was due the next major service.  I left it with Nick at Valley Ducati Service. Belt replacement and valve adjustment was just over $500, so if they are doing more work than that, then the cost may be reasonable.  After getting the bike back , I spent another $300 on chain and sprockets which I replaced myself.

+1, I'd highly recommend asking for a written estimate detailing all the services to be done.

Just for all to note, the OP is in Italy.

Things on my 24,000km that I will do myself at the upcoming 36,000.
 - oil
 - oil filter
 - clean air filter
 - charging battery
 - check gas tank (if it's clean inside)
 - check throttle wire
 - checking wheel bearings
 - checking steering bearings
 - change the brake fluid
 - change the clutch fluid
 - lube the chain
 - check rear hub cush drives
 - tighten the front spocket
 - check tires and air pressure
 - check brake pads
 - check exhaust for leaks
 - check numerous bolts
 - check head light and adjust
 - check other light bulbs
 - other lubrication points
 - check fuel lines for leaks
 - check clutch action
 
That leaves for my dealer to do:
 - belts
 - valves
 - computer error codes
 - check and adjust injection settings
 - spark plugs (to be tightened with the correct torque)
 - maybe fuel filter

This way I'll probably pay €250 instead of the average normal €750
(I'm in overpriced overtaxed Norway)

470 euros is unfortunately the already discounted ( for all models as of 2008) official Ducati rate ( there is a Table all official dealers should stick to) and includes all the replacement and checks (air filter, sparks, valve check, belts, fuel filter, oil change, etc..) that are prescribed on the manual..still an awful lot.
Turning to an independent Garage my result in voiding the warranty ( in theory in Italy there is a law that allows people to turn to not official mechanics as long as they use original and genuine parts but in practice      it doesn't happen)
