So it is that time of year when we start to think about winter storage of the toys. I decided to install the Battery Tender connector on my M696 this weekend, so might as well make a video of it. Now I know there are plenty of people with way more mechanical capabilities than me, so this is probably very basic. But the last video that I made changing the 696 oil / filter got many good responses that I think this one will also help a few people out. Ducati sells their own charger also, but I believe it's close to $200. So basically I replaced the OEM charging connector with the BT one so I can use the battery tender during winter storage. Nice video, but the manual makes this much more difficult than it has to be. I just added a battery tender extension this weekend. You can save a lot of hassle by just disconnecting the two hoses up by the filler hole. They pull right off. No need to mess with the carbon breather cover down low. Also I found no need to disconnect the electrical connectors. If you just remove the plastic covers and bolts holding the tank on you can shift the tank over enough to the right to access the battery.

Very nice video! But Ducati really made access to the battery a pain vs the older Monsters. I could have removed the battery and drank a 6 pak of Bud before he had the tank cover off!

Access is not easy on the 696's. I installed a Battery Tender connection on my '04 Monster in about 5 minutes.

Excellent video! I was trying to charge my battery but couldn't prop the tank up until I watch the video that there is a #5 hex screw underneath the tail section of the plastic fuel tank. After removed that screw it was easy. However, I did noticed that my brand new Monster 696 is missing one 8mm bolt on the left side that holds the tank to the frame. Guess the QC at the factory still needs improvement...

geez i am thinking about getting a new generation bike but damn changin the battery is a major hassle or just putting in a battery tender..
sure this isn't something i do everyday but its nice to know that its easy and not taking apart the entire bike like the newer bikes... wow that is some work there.

It's like a BMW. They suspend a battery in space and then build a bike all around it. Volvo did it with the A/C evaporator.

The molded plastic tank has 2 metal pins about 1-1/2" long fastened to the bottom on both sides. These 2 metal pins slide into the mounting points with rubber groumets inside on top of frame rails. These 2 rubber groumets should allow some flex in mounting the tank, correct? I will check with dealer when bringing the M696 for service.

seriously. only bolt the tank on the one side. the other one is a slide mount. even the rubber is different in them for that reason. i've heard dealers putting the second bolt on.. i think that's a bad move.

My 696 also had only one tank bolt, hum, I guess that is how the tank is installed. I thought the dealer left a bolt out when they installed my exhaust, I called them up and gave them a hard time about doing sloppy work.
