My project
«
on:

Ok so it's not as cool as a freakin motorcycle project
but it's up there right?
I'm building two 6X8 raised garden beds in my front yard. I have been digging up the sod and trying to preserve it, since I want to replant it elsewhere in the yard. It's been really hard work but Mo has been AWESOME helping. Once the sod is dug up, I'll build the frames and get them filled with compost.
Pics can be seen
here
I will have updated pics later tonight, we got one bed dug up and the second halfway done.

way to get over on the expensive veggie establishment...
you can even save expensive establishment gas by growing stuff out back
(locally brewed of course)

We've been thinking about brewing our own beer as well, we have some friends that do it and haven't had commercial beer in..... a long time.
Hopefully we grow enough veggies to actually not have to buy anything at the store, that would be awesome.

Cool! Congrats, that's very awesome! I'm envious of you being able to grow your own veggie garden. I've got a small container garden and I'm growing cherry tomatoes and yellow pear tomatoes...yummy! I've got Thai and sweet basil going, jalapeno's, slim jim pepper, habanero pepper and cayenne pepper. I've got rosemary still from last summer that is starting to look like a hedge (cool), chives that I started 5 years ago and a med. pot with anise, oregano, lavendar, peppermint and lemon balm.
I think this is the best garden I've had actually...hope they all make it.
Keep us updated on how it goes...more pics as it progresses too please.

Congrats, that looks like a cool project.
(BTW, cute pup too.
)
I used to do some gardening, including a container veggie/herb garden, but my travel schedule now makes it pretty much impossible.

so far tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, green peppers, jalapenos, cucumbers, um... can't remember what else. Once I get the beds built I'm going to the farmer's market and buying more starts, so I'm sure I'll find more stuff there.

Can't wait to see how the beds turn out Neenja. Fresh produce is the best! Eating something you took care of from seed to salad is way better than settling for greenery that came half way across the country mass packaged in a truck... I don't really have a good place to grow anything here at my apartment. It's hard enough keeping house plants happy! Luckily we have a decent farm stand just down the road, which still beats the pants off the grocery store!

I'm not worried about the pup, but try not to let neither Mo pee on the veggies...
It'll be a difficult task at best... heh

a little organic gardening wisdom...
marigolds keep away garden pests
grow beans with your tomatoes...
they keep away the aphids that
ruthlessly attack our little round
red tomato friends.

I'm so jealous of the fact that you can grow tomatoes and basil! It's near impossible here in SF. BTW, I maintain private gardens for a living, so let me know if you need help/advice. One of my clients recently decided to convert their lawn and ornamental garden into sustainable agriculture. My folks have been growing their own veggies (summer only--they live in NY) for almost 40 years. Like yourself, my mom started raising veggies while pregnant with me.
The more people who get on the bandwagon, the better!

Ditto!
It's called
Companion Planting
. Nasturtiums are helpful too, but they can get out of hand. My folks have practiced CP since the 70's.

Updated pics!!
Both gardens have been dug, tilled, and framed.
All we need to do now is add compost and get the starts planted and our garden is on it's way!!
ps, feel free to look around the albums too, you can see progressive shots of my belly too.
