Will these rearsets fit my bike?

I have answers!

First, a few things to think about:

CycleCat is no longer in business and there are essentially no spare parts. For anything. If you don't plan on crashing then perhaps this isn't an issue for you. I, for one, have a good idea that I may one day crash and might want to simply buy spares rather than have to buy another manufacturer's rearsets all together.

Step 2 in your analysis should be: My pipes are low-pipes. I need low-pipe hangers (Don't worry, if you are hell-bent on cyclecats, OnCycles has you covered and even have a few sets that include passenger pegs)

Step 3 in your analysis is easy, I'll do it for you: HERE ME NOW ALL: The rearsets on pre-02 Monsters are the same as 02+ rearsets for all DSS (dual sided swingarm) monsters. No, S2R and S4R guys do not count. You might say to yourself, but wait - didn't the frame change in 2002? Why yes it did. The biggest change this will mean to you is that 02+ Monsters use a different Triple Clamp offset/setup, different headstock diameter, etc. The footpeg brackets didn't move. The holes in the sump are in the same place. Some guys have a floating rear caliper with rod that attaches to the sump at the lower mounts of the factory rearsets on the clutch case side. None of this is affected when going to rearsets of another manufacturer (though you might have to buy another M10 or whatever it is bolt). This is a big ugly paragraph. The sidestand changed in 2000. This will only affect you purchasing a rearset that uses the lower sump holes (a la Rizoma DSS rearsets). This is an easy upgrade: Buy a new sidestand bracket assembly (spring, bracket, sidestand, bolts) and put it on. Voila, you are updated.

Step 4 in analysis: CycleCat rearsets, and MW / RedRacing / Style and Performance / AG Hammer rearsets (also Sato's but they have no accomodation for low pipes) are all "HANGING REARSETS" - just like on superbikes. They hang straight the F down from the frame which move your feet closer "in". This is a nice feature. Hooped monsters with lots of ride height cranked in may find some fitment issues with the hoop and the pipe brackets if there's no lateral extension to the exhaust brackets. Rizoma's brackets have such a bend to give you an example. Its not been much of a big deal to figure it out, and doesn't affect everybody - the stock suspension hoop is rather narrow unlike the aftermarket billet options that used to be available.

Along with straight 'hanging' rearsets is the lever-issue. Only two, close together points hold the rearsets on the bike, with the footpeg a few inches below that. On the superbikes, the peg is not below, but adjacent to those bolts. This can cause the rearsets to slightly bend the frame tabs if you stand up on the pegs a whole lot if you are a fatty. For purposes of this discussion, I admit I am a fatty (230lb large male land mammal. I like hamburgers.).

The reason this is something to think about is there's an alternative method more like the stock setup, and that's the Rizoma's. Never you mind that PJ's Parts and every other vendor says they are for 00+ DSS Monsters, I already explained said kickstand upgrade that gets everything squared away. The Rizoma has an additional mounting bolt down there by the sump, just like the stock rearsets (which have two, but that's a little excessive really). So that's something to look into. Drawback is these do not 'straight' hang, but bulge out slightly like the factory rearsets did. Makes using a reverse shifter not as pleasant as with straight hanging rearsets, but nevertheless do-able.

So you need to think about spare parts availability, whether you like hanging rearsets or 'triangulated' like the rizomas. CycleCat made a great product, and I'd no doubt grab a set for my bike, but I don't like that if I grind a peg down, that's all she wrote. (Then again, if you can figure out basic CAD or can find a machine shop, they should be able to get you a spare or two made up for a reasonable cost).
