French:  still holds the record for the most silent letters...including "x."

lol,

I have native fluency in French, taught the language at the university for 4 years, and have a Masters degree in 18th Century French Literature, but after all this time it still cracks me up to see threads like this about the language!!!  cheeky

Do you have any idea how hard it is to explain (clearly and effectively) why so many letters are silent or the rules that apply to them to students who think linguistically logical rather than abstractly?

bang head

I'm just starting to try and learn and it amuses me that whether you pronounce the last letter or not depends on the following word and occasionally the region of France you're in.  laughingdp

It's funny when the software basically says, "there are a lot of ways to say this, but use our way and fewer people will laugh at you."

Self instruction using Fluenz. It's not bad if I can manage to allot time to it.
