I need to borrow an impact
«
on:
December 09, 2009, 05:41:58 AM »
Anybody have an impact I can borrow? I'm not sure what the socket is, but it is bigger than a 20mm.
Cliff notes: My bike was working just fine, but I
changed my oil
and found a big piece of metal. I decided to do some investigating and I'm glad I did; as there was a broken spring that needs replaced. But anyway, I can't get the nut off the flywheel to get to the broken spring.
An electric or air would be fine; as I have an air compressor -- just no impact.
And anybody here locally have a lightened flywheel? I don't want to spend any more $$ than I have too because times are tight right now, but while I'm inside it certainly makes sense to lighten the flywheel, but it seems to be a very opinionated subject. I put a lightweight flywheel in my Audi and I love it! -- but I am undecided as to whether I want to lighten the flywheel on my bike.

I live in Houston unfortunately, or I'd let you use mine, but it's a 30mm nut if that helps. And it's supposed to be on there with red loctite, so you may want to heat it real quick before taking off. I've taken it off without successfully, but never hurts to be safe

I borrowed a 1-3/16's socket, but haven't tried it yet. (It is not a perfect fit as hiero mentioned the nut is a 30mm.) It is going to be a long day at work today so i probably will not try until Sat. or Monday.
In the mean time if someone does have a 30 mm and an impact, please post up -- I am watching this thread. There is always the possibility of the the ratchet/breaker bar slipping since the socket isn't a perfect fit.

harbor freight has their 1/2, 250lb electric impact drive on sale for $36 if there is a store near you... need a coupon, but easy to find.

I totally didn't think about it, but shouldn't you be able to use the penny in the starter gear trick to take the nut off as well as torquing it on?

There is a HF near me. I was planning on going up there if I didn't get a response here... but I didn't know about the sale you mentioned. I might have to go get that impact. I need to get an inch pound torque wrench anyway to be more precise on the case bolts. It needs to be 88 inch pounds or 7.4 foot pounds on the generator side and 6.6 / 79 on the clutch side... I would rather do 88 and 79 than "round" to 7.
I plan to do the penny thing when I do it. I wasn't successful the other night when I was fooling with it, because I didn't have a socket that would fit it... so I didn't really even try.

John, I might be able to help - I'm in Cedar Park. AND, I have an impact driver... I also have an electric one that doesn't require connecting the air compressor. I'll be watching the forum today - I'm at home. Just let me know.

It's a coupon on the back of their flyer which says "sale ends Jan 4, 2010".. $37.99 for the $69.99 impact. I have one and I stopped bothering with the air driven one because it works so well.

Thank you. What would be better for you Today, Tomorrow, Monday???
I'm supposed to be working, but I had to go try the 1-3/16 socket I borrowed and I couldn't budge it, but I do not have a little torch to heat it up; I tried with my blow dryer, but that didn't do anything. I didn't spend much time, because I have a meeting this afternoon, and I am not going to be ready for it unless I get back to work..... but I did try it long enough to determine I definitely needed an impact and or a little torch.
Do you have a 30mm deep well socket? The 1-3/16 socket I have is not an impact and is a 3/4" drive.

I know you said you are home today... I asked what day would be best for you because today isn't good for me.... but if Saturday or Monday really isn't good for you... I can change my schedule for today.

Thanks Moira!!! It will be tomorrow before I take the time to do it, but I'll let you know if I find the other pieces to the spring after I cut my filter open (that was a good idea). I want to know that I found all of the broken pieces before I put my covers back on. I thought once we got the flywheel off that I would see more pieces.
It was great meeting you. Have an excellent day!
oh... and I looked, the manual I have explains how to disassemble and re-assemble the gear selector lever... so I will not need your manual.
