factory can match the engine number to VIN, they are linked when the bike is imported, DNA will have it.
the state can, too. california titles have both the vin and motor number.

I already reported it to IC3
http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
We need to help each other out as fellow Ducatista's to those that have had their babies stolen, better safe than sorry..... Lets not just stand around and point out or look at these things and not try to do something to stop motorcycle theft. I know Miami has a really high percentage of annual motorcycle thefts and some people who own motorcycles even opt to live 30-45 mins away just so they dont have to worry so much, because bikes here get shipped out in containers overnight and are mostly never recovered.

actually you can buy one with just an mso, but he unlikely has one of those, either.
True. I have not been able to get my SD titled yet, and there was no problem at all shipping the thing here (Hawaii) from California. BUT I did have a bill of sale issued from the dealership.

The RC51 track bike I bought was bill of sale only as it had never been titled for street use. I did worry some about that but the bike still had the vin tag on the frame and the vin on the steering stem. Everything checked out and it ended up beeing a good deal. The fact that the VIN was grinded off the frame is a good sign that something is not right, if they went that far there may not be numbers left on the engine cases either. Hopefully it is not anyones bike that was taken from them.

I know Beverly Hills Ducati had a 1098 stolen ( "buyer" and his g/f used bogus info and fraudulent credit info)...Red btw.
If someone knows anyone there, it might be worth a shot to give 'em a shout.. I dont know if it was ever recovered.

I just freaking hate thieves! There are obviously many worse, violent crimes but thieves are so much more rampant. To work so hard to earn the money and spend the time to have something nice that really means something to you only to have some lowlife a##hole just take it!! Doesn't matter if it's a scooter, a horse or a painting... anything stolen just sucks. My favorite stories are the ones where some thieving prick gets rightfully and legally blown away by the owner/victim during the act. I know it sounds a little harsh being near Christmas and all but I worked in the State District criminal courts for years and sure the police catch a few but the a##holes just get back out on the street down the road and do it again. It's all they know.
Hope something comes from this doofuss posting the ad and the negative attention it's getting. Like maybe sirens and handcuffs!

You're telling me! Once it was worse-the SOBs didn't even take my property, just cut it in half.
There I was, starting a new business, raising turkeys, when some sicko took one of my only two prime breeding stock and cut it in half! I don't even know how he did it-it looked like poor or Harold got severed by a watermelon. What bastard did it just left him there in the highway to die alone.
If I ever find that guy, I tell ya....

The way I read the IC3 mission statement, seems to me they're looking for net-related crimes; cyber bullies, phishing scammers and hackers, rather than some scumbag selling "allegedly" stolen property...

no VIN number vehicles are a crime in themselves. Its not "allegedly" stolen at this point. There is no reason whatsoever to not have a VIN.

Quick question if anybody knows. I blew up the motor on my 2000 M900 and managed to find another 2000 motor that I stuck into the frame. Now my (California) title has the correct frame number but the wrong engine number. Any California residents ever spoken with the DMV? Of course, the mileage on the motor is now wrong, so they may just refuse to reissue title, but I was curious if anybody ever dealt with a situation like this.

I think you just take it to the DMV and/or CHP with the proper paperwork (Bills of sale for new engine, original title of your bike) and they will create a new title with the correct information and mark the original paperwork as old.
