Excuse me Sir, your bike is smokin.

« on: December 18, 2009, 07:44:14 AM »

I was at the local motorcycle shop and I came across this.
I like the way it looks and I can see with some mods that it would be even more bad ass then it is allready.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US/Content/Pages/2010_Motorcycles/2010_motorcycles.html?locale=en_US&bmLocale=en_US#/model/xl883n/gallery

But as I was walking away the short commings kept running through my mind. I'm torn, but fortunatly I have a whole East coast winter to dwell on it.

jimi

ps Opps, my bad, now it's fixed.

From the link and what I see, it's a 883 Sportster on his mind. IMO pass... not worth it... The 883 plant makes less power than a stock 620 did and weighs 100+ pounds more. The brakes are feeble and the transmission... oh my.

But, find out if there will be and HD demo truck coming to your area. They do where I live, so I put up and tried a few one morning. Only the Night rod had any real feeling of oomph to me, and brakes that didn't cause a sense of panic in me when I wasn't slowing down. So for me, it affirmed an opinion that I already had... but everyone's different.

If you're just interested in a cruiser - take a look at the Star Warrior - people who have them rave.

I liked Harleys. Then I rode one, then I rode 2 more just to give them the benefit of the doubt. With all the metric cruisers out there I haven't been able to figure out how anybody ends up with a HD.

I would definitely recommend you try it before you buy. If your really in the market for a cruiser check out the Victorys as well. Their terribly under rated in my opinion.

I think you'll find the 883 lacking.  My brother  has a Sportster Nightster 1200 (with pipe, chip, air cleaner) and it feels like it has about as much power as my Monsters have had.  I just think that 2/3 of the power would leave me really wanting more power.

Victory....

My good friend has a Victory Vegas.  For a cruiser it's seems like a very nice bike.  If I were into cruisers I would get one of those.

as much as I do like sportsters (and you will want the 1200, if anything ^_^ ), victory and the metric cruisers really give you some options

it's just a damn shame that the bikes keep getting bigger...

I had an 883 Sportster. Most uncomfortable bike I have ever owned and I have a Ducati Supersport from the 90's.

I hear the new ones are better though.

Also if you're taller than about 5'8" you'll feel very larger on an 883. I'm not quite 5'11 and I felt a bit jammed up when I've hopped on a couple 883s

I've got an '08 Nightster 1200 w/8500 miles on it.  It's custom painted (at the dealership and nicely done in a 50's Hot-Rod theme) and some custom bits which included the upgraded floating rotors.  If it had a stainless steel front line then the brakes would be pretty adequate.  As they are now, they're close....eh.....but not quite there.

Of all the air-cooled HD's up to 2008, this one was the fastest.  A point that I drive home to ALL "Big-Twin" owners at the stop-light drags.

Really nice bike for what it is.  She's 550lbs and puts out about 65hp but has around 80ft/lbs IIRC.  It's for sale BTW...

the 883 is a dog of an engine, you'd much prefer the 1200.  As for all the other comments....who gives a shit, if you like it after riding it go for it.   it's two wheels after all and HD is NOT and to my knowledge never will be known for power cruising of any type.  I have an Electra Glide, an S4r and a Vespa with wife having an S2r.  One can never have enough choices, some days are slow and leisurely days and others are twisting the throtle days.  Just ride one and decide for yourself.

Slow and sloppy can be good - just not in a motorcycle...
