i know that on cars its good to have some sort of cat or resinator to create back pressure.

Is it nessesary to do so on a bike. I'm plannin on getting an m696 in a week or so. Is it cool to run straight pipes, or will i hurt something?

If your running on a track were your in high RPMs the whole time you will be okay.  It will kill your low end numbers.  If you do an H or an X connecting the two should help out, but if you do a search you will find that most people who ran straight pipes usually puts a baffle or a reducer of some kind.

Good question Miami. I was wondering the same thing. Our Ducs have mechanically opened and closed valves, that are gonna open and close no matter what. I can see how the H or X pipes would equalize things. I allways thought traditional valves like the back pressure to help them close and not float. anybody else got anything  Huh?

from what i've read it's not about the close of the valves, it's about exhaust flow reversion from exhaust pulses. basically the exhaust gases getting sucked back into the head. i was talking to a dragster guy one day and he was telling me how he decides the length of his header pipes. he puts shoepolish on the pipes... runs the motor... where the shoe polish stops burning off... he cuts it. at that point is the reversion point he says.

Straight pipes will increase the flow of gasses through the engine.  Like opening the airbox this will affect the A/F ratio on the intake side.  If you run straight pipes or open airbox you will have to make changes to compensate for this.  If the 696 isn't going to give you the performance you need you may be better off to spend your $$.$$ on a machine that will.

i'm interested in a cost effective way to make some noise. but at the same time, i want to do it safe, legal, and so people won't look at me and say. "what a duche"

There is a fab shop local to me that does very nice custom work for very reasonable prices. much cheaper than the ex-box i'd like, or aarow, or termis. But i know that some of those higher priced kits come with the DP ECU....so i'm torn.

The most cost effective way to make noise on the S2R's are to drop the cans and run the udder.  Free is good.  Not sure about the exhaust on the new monsters are.  As far as custom stuff goes, before I went with Motocreations on my exhaust extensions, I was looking into Big City Thunder's Thunder Monsters.  Pretty much drop in back pressure that are loud as shit.  I talked to them a couple of times and they have engineers/techs that are pretty knowledgeble and very helpful.  The Thunder Monsters are reasonably priced also.  In the end, I went with Motocreations and am glad I did.  Mark did a killer job matching the extensions to my headers.

My brother has a 2008 Triumph Thruxton. It sounded like a sewing machine stock. He found a set of slip ons for 250 that run an inverted cone baffel and are stupid loud. sound very very nice. mellow but nice throat. When he's at idol it fairly quiet, but when he gets on it, look out.
I love the de-cel pops it has too.

If i could find someting to make a simular sound i'd be happy. plus, 250 is a damn good price. IMO

The only machines, serious ones, that I've seen straight pipes on are dragracers. reason is that they only operate at one RPM. Even then the length is tuned to work at a certain RPM.
The best pipe to produce power will be a 2 into 1 pipe as one cylinder helps to scavenge the exhaust from the other one.

You also have the noise factor that is a form of pollution and is probably the single most damaging thing to our sport that there is.
Please consider this when making an exhaust system decision.
