switching out handlebar for clip ons

a little help. I am taking off the handlebar for the first time to replace with clip ons. what kind of tool do i need in order to get the top triple clamp off?

The angle of the fork will become steeper - as a result the bike will be less directionally stable and steer quicker into turns. You will also change the weight distribution forward. Both are considered good mods for Monsters, but it takes some getting used to and is not welcome for everyone. Depends on your riding style and preferences, which are?

This is a monster 695. It has a SSS conversion. As far as I know the rear shocks are stock.  I understand that the angle of the fork will become steeper. Correct me if Im mistaken, I should be able to balance this out by adjusting the rear

I have been riding for the past 10 years or so. I have ridden everything from dirt bikes to SBKs and now the monster. ON the street I tend to ride a bit more aggressively. I throw the bike into turns and hang off quite often. I like a bike that is flickable.

Is there a reason you want to install the clip-ons above the triple?

The rear height is not adjustable in stock form on the 695, and you probably wouldn't want to lower the rear anyway due to clearance issues.

I'd say go with mounting them below the triple, and get clip-ons with rise if needed

I agree. I think thats what Im gonna do. But that might make the bars really low. What do you think about moving the top triple flush with the end of the fork. Oh and I have GSXR forks.

Sorry, I have no FHE with the gsxr forks...at all.

How much for the fork is above the top triple?

There are some clip-ons with a good amount of rise out there = not too much lower than stock when mounted below the top triple:

there is 15 mm of fork above the top triple. I have 2 choices... move the fork down then I would put the clip ons under the triple. Or move the fork up about 10 mm and then I would have enough fork to put the clip on clamp above the top triple.

These require 19mm of clamp space.

To answer your original question, you need an allen wrench and you *may* need something like a rubber mallet to bang the triple if it doesn't come right off.  If you don't have a rubber mallet and the triple won't come off, you can also put a a towel or a rolled up t-shirt on the triple and then use a hammer.  Banging it might scratch the forks a bit.  Alternatively, you can use a screwdriver or something (be careful not to scratch or groove) to open up the expansion joints in the triple as you try to take it off.  This should make the triple easier to take off.  Go in from the bottom so that if you do scratch it, it isn't noticeable. 

As noted, you don't have to do anything with that big center nut with all the little holes in it in a circle.  The triple will come off without touching that nut (it's the steering stem).

Thanks man. I was looking for that info. That weird centre nut threw me off. Will do it tomorrow. Any thoughts on moving the triple up about 15 mm? That way I can get the clip on's under it.
