I have heard the diesel in the Jeep Liberty Diesel is junk.

Can't recall who told me that.

I think the motor is OK, it's the trans that is junk.

The liberty's diesel is a VM which is the same make out in the euro version of diesel Jeeps in the 90s.  VM used to own Ducati!

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

Why don't you turn your Ranger into a 4wd?
A transfer case, driveshaft, and front axle should be easy enough to come by, any scrapyard should be able to hook you up, and it's got to be cheaper than a new vehicle.
I would think you could get away for under $1k in parts.

find me a mitsubishi 4d55 or 4d56 transfercase/etc.  it doesn't have the regular Ford/Mazda parts.

I just bought a Mazda CX7 diesel, 2.2litre turbo engine 125kw of power and 400Nm of torque, great little care and its all wheel drive. Subaru also make a 2.0 litre diesel Outback and Liberty.

Don

if only they sold those in the USA.. the car companies put crappy diesels on the road in the 80s and people quickly got sick of them -- imagine a tractor engine in your Cadillac.

Now, Americans are all but brainwashed against diesel cars.  It's depressing, it's a much better ride in so many ways.  Are the Subaru using H4 engines.

I used to have a 1972 Mercedes 220D with a 4-speed manual. I loved that car, it got 32mpg city. If I could find another mercedes with a stick and air, I'd get rid of my crown vic.

Diesel is getting a better rep here. The MB, VW and the new BMW diesels are really hot sellers right now with their new "Green Diesel" image. I would love the BMW X5 diesel(much better than the used Tuareg and at the same price). Great vehicle, and gets 28mpg.

If your not afraid of a little work: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/cto/1522251466.html. Put in a Turbo Diesel 5 cyl(it's been done) from the junk yard and youve got what you want.

Maybe that was it.

I was looking at those when I was car shopping last year.

I'm not afraid of the work, but I'm not going across the USA for a car with a blown engine. On the other hand, I found this which looks very nice...

Good price. That motor is a baby. at 171k, it's just barely broken in. Go for it.

OK, here's the new V6 TDI Touareg, 225hp 406 lb-ft of torque! It's AT LEAST on par with the X5 as far as quality goes. Also all the 2009 and up VWs include maintenance for the first 3 years like BMW...

at least they aren't using that V10 POS anymore, that was just overkill.

No passenger car like that needs more than a 6 cyl, period.
