Author Topic: Stripped thread in my carbs.  (Read 1329 times)

Evening ladies and dudes.

I recently bought a '99 reg M600, in pretty good nick. The previous owner had removed the carbs to fit a restrictor kit (UK law for under 21's), and when I removed them again today to fit new needles, i was given quite a shock.
There is some kind of oil reservoir running along the outside of the bowls, and the pipes feeding it need to be unscrewed to remove the carbs.


When I took this one out, the entire thread from the inside of the bowl came with it, meaning I now can't tighten it back up. It just pisses oil everywhere.

Where, if anywhere, could I source parts for the carbs, I realy dont want to have to buy a whole new set. If i could just replace the bowl then I'd be chuffed.

If I cannot source them, will the metal casting withstand re-threading? I know it's useless in its current state but id rather not totaly destroy it. If i can re-thread it and just use a larger screw that'd be fantastic.

Those bolts are banjo bolts and you cant just use a larger one. It needs to mate with the fitting.

I'd use a helicoil with confidence in that application.

BTW that's a carb heater setup that Ducati used to try and prevent carb icing. It never really worked. You might consider getting bowls off a different bike and plugging those lines at the other end.

Until i get helicoils, i'll just plug the lines and holes in the carbs. thankyou very much for he advice guys! The project can continue!

Ah, the oil jacket float bowl solution..

It didnt work on my bike and our winters in Melbourne are nothing to yours! The factory fix for icing carbs appears a half assed solution.

Get a stock oil line which bypasses the lot and save yourself the plugging and threading. Plug the holes in the bowls with little rubber bungs. It will tidy up the area and make it easier to work on in the future. Or you might even know of a good braided hose shop that could make you a nice custom oil line (even anodised) or they may modify the one you have got.

Someone could post a picture of what the stock line should look like, or a nice custom one (I can't get the pictures to work).

I've got a spare float bowl here in my shop if you want to replace the one you have there...  Just have to ship it from SoCal to Europe...

(replacing the float bowl or removing the oil lines altogether would be my vote on a good repair)

I've totaly removed the hoses. Put bolts in the engine block to plug it there, and cut some rubber for the carb end. Dont think ill bother putting it all back to be honest. Though if I re-consider, I'll be in contact duck.
