I'm not sure it's the right ride for a large group.

Part of it perhaps, or an o/note trip for a large group, but a day trip would be stretching it.

And the dirt is very short but would be a little hair raising for those not liking dirt - its a steep downhill with some heavy rutting and some deepish gravel at times.

yeah very true, we would be needing to move pretty smartly or cut it a bit short to take in the best parts.

Today I did the North West Loop Matty posted last week
I reckon it's an absolutely frikkin awesome loop. The road from Denman to Rylstone is outstanding. Plus you get Putty and Bells Line; the connecting roads are reasonable as well.   [moto]

As well as sweet roads, it is also scenic. Photosynthy picture thing

It is a longish day, even LoneWolf stylez. I went past the Caltex on Old Windsor at about 7:00am, went past it on the way back at around 3:30pm.  So ~600Kms and 8.5 hours. I was speed limit +GST for most of it because it's double demerits  Police . Short breaks for fuel and coffee was about it. No real lunch to speak of, but there are awesome cafes and pubs at Rylstone, which you go past about 12:30.

I reckon it could be done if you stick to smallish groups of riders with similar pace and ensure that everyone knows where they need to go (and if Jukie doesn't get lost Evil)

The dirt part is short (say ~1km) but if you don't like riding in rutted gravel up and down big hills, then this route is probably not for you.   I've got every servo on the route in GPS now, the longest single stretch without gas is around ~150kms so S4*'s can make this even though the halfway house is destroyed.

I would seriously consider doing it again next weekend or the weekend after. It's that good.

Awesome! Did you get detoured around the bridge works just out of denman?

I agree that it rocks, but not for everyone as you've said...

Add a couple of hours to get there and back, and a lunch stop, and it's a 12 hour day on the bike - big day, but still very doable in small groups.

I might just have to join you on that ride!

oh, and well done keeping it to limits + gst, there are parts of that loop which scream for a lot more than that....

Yep. Got the detour. Cattle Grids are fun!

I have no idea what you are referring to, I abide by the posted speed limit at all times.  Cool

oooh spooky time traveling ride..

* Are you trying to do this clockwise or anti clockwise? From a fuel management perspective, its sorta easier to go anti clockwise.

* You do know that the road from St Albans to Bucketty is unsealed dirt yeah?  Undecided  (This bit is dirt: http://bit.ly/bbFDmU)  You need to take the Wisemans Ferry, not the St Albans ferry if you want Tarmac all the way. If you take Wisemans (http://bit.ly/9sK8Be), you can get fuel at Kulnura (That should get you through to Broke).

* You might be better of cutting across Milbrodale Road  and getting fuel at Broke than going all the way into Singleton. http://bit.ly/biHPsw  It's about 100 times nicer. You go past Llama farms and wineries instead of the gaping wounds that are the open cut coalmines around Singleton.

Try this on for size: http://bit.ly/bHgNDy  This is pretty much the route we have taken in the past, except we finish off on the Old Pac instead of going via Wisemans.

A) Fuel up at Wilberforce Caltex
B) Stop for a stretch and a smoke at the burnt down halfway house, you will need the rest for the next 10 Miles of Goodness.
C) Fuel up at Broke.
D) Get lunch at Wollembi
E) Get Fuel again at Kulurnu
F) Cattai Ridge road kicks ass on Sackville road.

There is no cell phone reception for most of Putty Road.  Be careful on the 10 Mile stretch from Milbrodale to Garland Valley (There are a few tricky closing radius corners, there are some "OMG When they say 35KMs an hour they fekkin mean it" corners).  There are also lots of nice long flat bits where police enjoy sitting and waiting.

It's an awesome bit of road, but it demands respect. There are lots of little memorials on the side of the road that stand testament to that.
