I moved all the way from MD to AZ and had my bike packed in the back of a Penske truck. The truck was packed tight. I had the duc along the passenger side wall with the back tire up against the front wall of the truck, near the cab. I put a blanket over it and packed a bunch of pillows around it. In first gear with the kickstand down and a bunch of furniture boxing it in tightly. No tie-downs, no problems at all. Up and over the TN mountains in the rain.
I did that from AZ to MI with my DR350. I, unfortunately, something came loose and the disc brake was bent up a bit.
I had a crate built for my Duc. Now I ride the bike up the ramp and into the bottom of the crate. Tie her down, take off the headlight and handlebars, screw on the sides and top of the crate and she's ready to go! I push the bike to the front of the truck and pack everything in behind it.
Here's a clip. I'll post up pics of the assembly as well.
