Rear brake and Shift levers
«
on:
January 28, 2010, 07:41:11 AM »
Just wondering if anyone knows of any kind of decent replacement levers for the stock s*R rearsets. I don't want to go GP shifting, and as anyone who has had to replace these levers knows, the stock prices are crazy. I've made my levers work, but they certainly aren't pretty.
Right now, the ultimate goal is some aftermarket rearsets... but that is a bit of money. If I could find some decent levers, i wouldn't need rearsets... quite frankly I'm happy with the locations as it is.
Any ideas?

Most of the GP shift setups I see available just have the lever attached directly to the engine as opposed to a connecting rod. Don't like the idea of going down and having that stress put on the case. with rearsets I know I could try it out, but who knows if I will.

That connecting rod is made of steel, and the shifter youd get would be aluminum. The aluminum would flex and bend before that part breaks.
The toe piece would probably snap off before that happens, theres nothing to worry about. my bike skidded on the left side with the toe piece digging into dirt and its fine.
Ive also had it droped on the left side when a car hit it, it bent, but the actual connecting rod is perfectly fine, though the shifter needed replacement. i woudlnt worry about it.

yeah, no concerns over here about the direct spline attachment. The alu shifter will get bent out of the way or break off long before it damages that spline. There is a titanium shifter out there, and that might be more of a concern, but again, the toe piece itself will disembark before that occurs.
Then you've got the footpeg taking the brunt of the impact anyhow.
Direct spline connection feels fantastic. I understand that some people are just used to the conventional shift pattern that comes from the factory, and won't switch, but i likes it a lot.
If you are looking at rearsets, any rearsets, they are going to expensive.

Oh I know rears are expensive. But I found a good deal on Gilles rearsets from indy superbikes. Only 500

Gilles for 500 is a bargain
If you get those, make sure they come with the new shouldered washer for the main bolt - to avoid binding. The seller SHOULD know about this. Link to the bargain?
Good looking and affordable(?) rearset bling could be powder coating them black as on some S4R models. Looks great.
IMO, leave the pegs natural. Carbon heel guards?

Just a heads up. The ones in your link is not the ones for S*R. At least the photo is incorrect.
As I mentioned, get the newly added parts. GillesToolig corrected their design flaw by adding some washer/spacer thingy.
This is a thread where this was discussed. In my first post you can see a link to the thread where the Gilles design flaw was discussed - and the solution to the issue.

This is what the S*R rearsets look like:

If not for your own peace of mind, then at least for mine, please confirm the corrective added parts.
And of course: pictures when it's done

If you change your mind, I just bought this rear brake lever:
and this reverse shifter:
from
http://www.slingshotracing.net
I'll let you know how they look once I get them. A lot cheaper than $500, each part was $70.

It does, I have used the SSR one before, but have this one now and prefer it (it was cheaper too)
