Cabin fever is hitting hard in MN this winter, and I am going completely nuts.

To (hopefully) alleviate it to some degree, I am planning to finally buy an XBox in the next week since I've wanted one for some time anyway. And it will be cool to use to get movies from Netflix as well.

What's the best core system to get? I don't plan to get into gaming online or anything, just want to blow the shit out of something and/or do some racing when the need strikes.

As far as the games, what's the best FPS shoot-em-up game these days? Auto racing?

Help....

Popeye the Sailor

No help on the system, but Forza Motorsports, IMO is a great auto racing game.

FPS-Left for Dead, both 1 and 2.

Resident evil also rocked.

Gears of war 1 and 2 good FPS.

Offhand, any of those should keep you busy for a good long while.

I'm currently hooked in the worst of ways on Borderlands.

What he said.

I've been liking the Moto GP games as well.  Although, they do tend to aggravate I-cant-ride-itis.

Gears of war is great (the first one)  Haven't played 2 yet.

I tend to wait until games are like $15 or $20 somewhere before I'll buy them.  I can't do $60.  There's a blockage in my nervous system that keeps my hand from getting out my wallet.

All the Halo games are fun too.

Get the regular xbox with 20gig hdd. its cheap allows you to watch movies, play games that require you to save. etc. i think its 199.

Make sure you put your xbox on a surge protector. ;)

surge protectors are barbaric and outdated.

Whichever xbox you end up with just make sure it has a hard drive. Even if you don't think so, you will end up needing it.
With this many years on in the current generation of consoles there are allot of great and cheap games to choose from.

I have an "xbox problem" which im slowly weening myself off of. So I have allot of games to recommend.

For "Shooter" games.
Halo series is getting old but still has a strong following. It's worth while to play through the all 3 if you havent yet.
Call of duty series. Modern warfare 2 is the current flavor of the month and probably the easiest to learn.
Gears of War 1 & 2 are awesome but it's usually a love it or hate it game. This is my personal favorite.
Left for Dead 1 & 2
Battlefield 2 is looking like its going to be good.

For more general single player campaign type shooters.
Bioshock 1 was great and 2 is due out any day.
Assassins Creed 1 & 2

RPG or RPG-ish. aka Games that will steal you life from you.
Oblivion
Fallout 3
Fable 2
Dragon Age Orgins
Mass Effect 1 is very good, 2 is great
Borderlands gets great reviews, although im yet to play it.

Driving games.
Forza 3 is great if you like simulator level driving.
Dirt 2 is great if you like fun forgiving level driving.
Moto GP is hard.

Some other highly recomended games.

Braid
Castle Crashers
Zuma
Carcassonne
Catan

Portal. Came in the "Orange Box" with half life 2 and Team fortress 2
Crackdown
Civilization Revolution
Batman Arkham Asylum

Left 4 Dead is teh UBER!... if you have friends to play with you on co-op.

single player isn't as rewarding, though still fun.  the first game you can probably find on the cheap, but the 2nd one is just better (melee weapons!)

finally picked up the new COD... the single player campaigns are always pretty fun  [thumbsup]

I like gears of war 2 better than 1, but I have nothing empirical to back that up with.

the only racers I've played were forza 3 and... test drive? the one where you're in hawaii. I think it was test drive

Speedbag

I've played the first Halo on PC but not the other two so I guess they're shoe-ins. Gears of War definitely looks interesting as does Left for Dead.

Forza 3 is at the top of the list.  [thumbsup]

I currently play Left 4 Dead 2 and halo a lot...

also downloaded worms armageddon and it's an amazing drunk game wit friends.

looking to get forza

The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over.  - HST

If you're looking just to play single player and watch Netflix movies, then get the arcade version. It only has 256 MB storage, so don't go nuts.

As for games. I end up always going back to first-person shooters. I'm addicted to Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 right now and Battlefield is looking good.

I've played all the Forza games and the MotoGP ones as well. MotoGP gets better every year and Forza is excellent. Pure is a cool off-road game. Halo is a bit outdated, specially the single player. Halo 3 is still the most played online game on XBox Live.

For games that you sneak around and have to solve puzzles, Assasins Creed.

Left 4 Dead is just zombie killing fun. I don't think there's a more fun game out there.

Bit the bullet and got an Elite unit over lunch, in case I get snowed in tomorrow (almost hoping for it). The HDD could come in handy, plus it's black and spiffy.

Grabbed Halo 2 and Forza 3 for now. Let the games begin!

lots of good games that are a little older for <$20 (like gears of war, mass effect, bioshock,etc...)

duccarlos

forza 3 is the dogs balls. i love this game.
halo obviously. ODST is great too.
army of two is awesome, and a second one just came out. you can get the first new for $19.99. It's a great game.
Resident evil 5 sucks, avoid it.
if you want an EPIC time waster, Fable 2 is the way to go.

do yourself a favor and don't buy a used Xbox. the used ones tend to have problems, as the system itself was formerly very prone to hardware... issues.

the newer ones seem to be find. the standard one now comes with a 60gb HDD. i have one that is going on 2 years old, no probs whatsoever.

let me know when you get on Xbox Live [thumbsup]

NHL 10 is INCREDIBLE if you like hockey. best hockey game ever.
