 :'(  :'(  :'(

Seems a Carbonworld shortened tail kit (DP style beer tray replacement) wont work with a ventura rack fitted.  The tabs that you mount the tail light onto extend about 1/2 inch further back into the subframe that the original beer tray does.  The Ventura rack mount runs parallel to the beer tray/taillight assembly so it aint gonna work and is heading back to monsterparts...

Damn!  Hate the beer tray as I have an integrated LED/indicator tail light so the original indicator mounts on the beer tray look oooorrible with mounting holes in full view etc.  Why do I have an integrated taillight?  Because the original indicators fouled my ventura soft pannier bags.  Seems there's no winning!

Anyone have any other ideas to tidy up the rear end without resorting to a tall chop?

[img]I have the genuine DP rear guard and i just bent the tangs around the bar for the rack, it's tight and a bit fiddly to do everything up but it does work. I can send you pic if required

The pic you have of the replacement tail unit looks like the one I have. Its a "no chop" tail unit. I recently fitted a ventura rack and I think I know what you mean but I modified mine to fit and it wasn't hard.

The problem I had was that the aluminium plate that mounts the tail light was too wide where it meets the ventura cross brace. I just marked up the offending parts of the aluminium plate and took those parts off with an angle grinder. The sections I removed were only about 10mm long and 3 to 4 mm deep and as its under the tail you can't tell unless you get underneath it and look up.

I'll try to get some photos to better explain it. Does this sound like what you are having problems with?

Edit: Just saw your pic. Looks different to mine as the ventura brace goes underneath. I have an s2r800.

My Ventura rack mount is exactly like Macca's.

When I line the mount holes of the alloy plate onto the subframe it put's the tail light mounting tangs right in the middle of where the Ventura rack crosses.

Here's a thought tho.  My subframe is of the 3 mounting hole variety.  The Tail unit is for the 4 hole type.  Before I boutght it, Jeff from Monsterparts tried it on an old tail section of the 3 hole type that he had that had been chopped and the front 2 holes line up.  Was going to use them and drill two hole in the sub frame cross plate for the rear two.

But now I'm thinking that "maybe" while the 2 front holes do line up from the 3 hole to the 4 hole type, they are actually in different positions on the 2 subframes.  ie my subframe has the 2 front holes closer to the taillight than the 4 hole type does.  So (again maybe) thats why a 4 hole mount plate sends the tabs too far forward on my bike.

In which case maybe I have to drill all 4 mount holes through my subframe rear plate as they all need to be in different positions to my exisiting mount holes...  Huh?  Or forget trying to use a 4 hole tail on a 3 hole bike.

(God I just re-read that...does what I'm saying make sense to anyone?!?!?)

It does to me waytogo

Just another question though: if you make new holes, will the new tray no longer cover your frame end tubes?
Maybe you'd be better off making modified tabs for the light....

I guess it depends on if making new holes actually moves it to the correct position overall as opposed to just fixing the light tab position.

I didnt get far enough on the weekend to see if it was just the light tabs were out or if the tray would actually be out of position as well.

More garage time required....(wife's gonna be happy NOT  LOL)

Techno, I think it might help to have some photos of what you have done too ... its always good to see alternatives.

We just found it easier to re-install the stock beer tray to Jukie's bike (620) for Turismo ... she couldn't get it off fast enough when we got home.

I also know Andy got the rack to work on his bike (S2R1k) with that carbon tail ... apparently took a bit of fiddling, but it does work.

Sorry I have no idea about the 3 hole / 4 hole issue.

Gday again all.

Well I just spent hours in the garage with the tail in bits and it's definitely a 3 hole vs 4 hole issue.  The front two holes are the same distance apart width ways but they must be about 1cm closer to the front of the bike on mine compared to the 4 hole models.

I could get the mounting plate in position no problem with the ventura rack, sat the CF section on top and the whole assembly is definitely not being fouled out of position by the ventura rack.  But to actually mount it I'd have to drill 4 new holes into the flat part between the rear frame extensions.  Rear 2 would not be a problem...straight into a flat section but as mentioned the front 2 are approx 1cm out which puts them plumb into where the flat section starts to "cup" to hold the grommets for the stock beer tray mount.  Drilling would be a nightmare/mess.

So bottom line...my reckoning is that a 4 hole short tail kit wont work with 3 hole framed bikes.   bang head

Happy to be proved wrong, otherwise it's getting sent back to monsterparts shortly (Thanks for being so cool with this Jeff  waytogo)

So...anyone know of a beer tray replacement for 3 hole framed bikes?  Buggered if I can find one online anywhere....

Cheers

Andy

I think this tail looks good enough to be creative waytogo

If it was my bike, I would have bolted it down with the two rear bolts and then attached it with zip ties or hose clamps at the tail light tabs, maybe even over the sides of the carbon wings. After cutting the two front bolts, of course.

What do you think?
