Author Topic: Anodize Stock Pressure Plate  (Read 4407 times)

Hi folks, I just purchased an M1100, which is my first bike with a dry clutch.  I'd like to open up the cover, etc., but am somewhat on a tight budget.  I was curious if anyone has installed an open clutch cover, but kept the stock pressure plate.  I'm assuming the stocker is aluminum, is this correct?  Has anyone had the stock pressure plate hard anodized?  I love the speedy moto stuff, but don't want to spend the $500 or so for the full set up.  TIA

I believe it's steel, at least it was on the last bike I bought with a stock pressure plate  Cheesy. I've seen some painted pressure plates, but not anodized.

Ducati stock pressure plates are aluminum and could be anodized.

Most people paint them.

I can paint the thing for you. Not familiar with anyone on the seacoast. There is a powder coater in Greenland that is OK. I don't like his paint removal techniques on aluminum.

There is a shop not too far from you that does hard ano. pm gage for the details. He had a bunch of stuff done last winter that looked really nice.

The stocker are cast aluminum. It can be anodized, but has a tendency to come out blotchy as the cast pieces take up the dye at different rates in different places. IF you went black as black as you can, then that would probably cover any blotches. But if you went a lighter color, then there's a greater chance of uneven colors. So that's why you see most folks paint the stock ones, as opposed to attempting to anodize.

Ive cleaned one half assed and spray painted it. and it came out fine.

Ive also powder coated one, but you need to clean the hell out of it to make it look good. not worth the effort.

Thanks guys, maybe I'll take my chances and rattlecan spray the thing.  The worst that will happen is I'll be forced to purchase a billet clutch plate!

Paint is your best bet as Yuu said the dye will be absorbed differently on a cast piece unless you really polish it.

I'd go to DP for the paint or check the classifieds and ebay... There's a ton of used ones out there.

a rattle can of enamel paint is all you need.

the plate will come up a treat.

make sure you either take the bearing out or mask it over before you start.

Gotta second (third, forth, ??) the painting. A good cleaning and several thin coats of paint is what I used...

At the risk of getting flamed into oblivion, i am running an open CC with a stock pressure plate (i can hear the collective gasps of several hundred DMFers).

My CF cover has a lot of coverage soo you don't see the whole plate.  I intended to get a new PP, but after a few months kinds of like the stock look as it matches the rest of the 'silver' parts left on an otherwise blacked out bike.
