When I was in the Marine Corps I went to a cold weather mountain survival school and we used old magnesium snow shoes. We would take our survival knives and shave some of the Magnesium off of the shoes and use it to start a fire. Worked like a charm.

It just burns real well, Doesnt explode or anything. Hit some of it with your fire starter and it will burn real hot but burns fast so you have to have your kindling ready to go.

Actually, when moving magnesium blocks hit pavement, brilliant white sparks are emitted.

No fire.

I'll see if I can find a video.

i know TI does. I guess it would need to be finer to actually catch on fire instead of just come off as sparks.
Life, alas is very drear. Up with the glass and down with the beer!

old VW's had magnesium engine blocks - way back in the day I used to volunteer at a firestation for free pool & beer and they told us if you ever had to put one out to just use low flow water without the nozzle because the aeration would cause it to flame up/explode

now pure sodium in water - that explodes real nice  8)
