do you think there would be more plastic bag deaths if there wasnt a warning label on it?

I am saying that, despite all the warning labels on plastic bags, there are still dumb kids with irresponsible parents dying from plastic bag suffercation.  Changing the shape of hot dog to a basketball and some kid will still take a mouth full and choke on it.  Jaw Breakers?  Don't get me started on that.

This attitude is annoying. When I was a kid it was, "hey, be careful with this or you may get hurt," and now it's turned into "everyone has to eliminate the things that may hurt," which isn't realistic.

Though, the conspiracist in me thinks these tories are so outlandish, so over the top that they simply can't be true and are only released to instigate a visceral reaction against other, less egregious efforts to regulate something. Gotta watch those Illuminati. They're tricky.

PICK YOURSELF UP
From the Film: Swing Time  1936
(Lyrics by: Dorothy Fields / Music by: Jerome Kern)
Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers

(He)
Please teacher, teach me something,
Nice teacher, teach me something.
I'm as awkward as a camel, that's not the worst,
My two feet haven't met yet,
But I'll be teacher's pet yet,
'Cause I'm gonna learn to dance or burst.

(She)
Nothing's impossible I have found,
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up,
Dust myself off,
Start All over again.

Don't lose your confidence if you slip,
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up,
Dust yourself off,
Start all over again.

Work like a soul inspired,
Till the battle of the day is won.
You may be sick and tired,
But you'll be a man, my son!

Will you remember the famous men,
Who had to fall to rise again?
So take a deep breath,
Pick yourself up,
Dust yourself off,
Start all over again.

(He)
I'll get some self assurance
If your endurance is great.
I'll learn by easy stages
If you're courageous and wait.

To feel the strength I want to,
I must hang on to your hand,
Maybe by the time I'm fifty
I'll get up and do a nifty.

(Both)
Nothing's impossible I have found,
For when my chin is on the ground,
I pick myself up,
Dust myself off,
Start all over again.

Don't lose your confidence if you slip,
Be grateful for a pleasant trip,
And pick yourself up,
Dust yourself off,
Start all over again.

I grew up with what I think were intelligent parents.  I had chores and needed to get them down to have fun.  I had a motorcycle when I turned 11.  I was allowed to go anywhere, anytime on that thing.  I never even owned a helmet.  I also had a high power pellet rifle when I turned 8 and a 22 by the time I was 10.  I could shot the pellet gun any time I wanted to and would think nothing of taking off on the moto out into the desert with it strapped to my back.  I had to ride on at least a mile of pavement to get to dirt.  Never had a complaint. Never got stopped by a LEO.  Now, if a kid takes off on his moto with a gun strapped to his back, and god forbid, without a helmet, there would be a SWAT team there in a heartbeat.  Half the stuff we did back then (80's essentially), would get me a one way ticket to Gitmo.

I am still alive.  We wonder why kids these days (shit, did I just write that) can't think for themselves and expect everything to be handed to them.  Life is hard - some mistakes will cost your life. Those are good lessons that we are throwing away......

One of the many, many things that bothered me about that article was when it stated that hot dogs were responsible for 17% of asphyxiations in kids under 10. Well, how many is that!? 17% of a 10,000 would matter more than say 17% of 100.
And angler, agreed, you can't legislate all danger out of this world. Or you raise a generation of lazy, entitled pansies. See: current youth.

...and the pussification of america continues.   [roll]

I think this article came about because doctors are looking at the things that kill young kids more often, and asking themselves what can be done to prevent those death.  Theirs is not a social as much as a medical position.  Obviously there are social implications, but I don't think doctors set out to determine how they can derail evolution or turn us in a country full of pussies.

Warning labels limit liability more than affect behavior so I think the actual effects of implementing their recommendations will be somewhere in the neighborhood of jack and shit.  Aside from pissing people off, I mean.  Despite how stupid and pointless this initiative would be, I don't see how putting warning labels on things limits our freedom of choice, whichever amendment that might be.

I did foolish things when I was young, and managed to get away with it relatively unscathed.  Do I reflect on this and laugh?  Yes.  Do I think this integral to the process of becoming an adult or man?  No, not unless I recognize luck as being necessary to those processes.  I think I am realistic in recognizing the difference between positive feedback and a lack of negative feedback.  I think the ultimate goal is to not do stupid things, not to get away with doing stupid things.
