M1100 Custom Paint Scheme
«
on:
February 23, 2010, 01:56:21 PM »
Hey guys,
Been thinking of a custom color scheme for my M1100. Did a quick (kind of crappy) photo edit here;
What do you think?
I found this pic and used it as inpiration;
My wife and kids are on vacation, so I obviously have too much time on my hands!

That's funny, from the pic I found I thought the bike was blue, but it's actually the senna grey. Awesome bike, thanks for the link.

Blue theme. Thats different... and I kinda like it. The LOUD red pinstriping and the LOUD red wheels are a cool feature too
.
Go on, do it!!

I like it
, but I would play around with the red wheels - darker/rusty red and/or a mix of red and black/dark grey.
Maybe swap the tank colors as well - not saying it'll be better, but it might result in ideas...
hmmmm ... Senna grey instead of the blue? As it is now, the gold forks are disturbing. Anodize?

Spidey is a long time member of the Monster community. Do a search around here and you'll find a lot more photos of his bike. Also, the guy who did all the custom work is also a member here.

It was originally a Senna '03 M1000 and I wanted to stay with that general theme. Here's what it looked like originally:
It's a bit difficult to get a good pic of the colors on my bike. The light grey on the tank and cowl and fender is from an Audi TT. It looks flat grey, but has a hint of blue in the light. The dark grey on the tank, cowl and fender is from a Lexus. It's metallic and changes colors in the light. The frame and triples (and other bits) are powdercoated and are a slightly different grey from the light Audi grey on the tank. It's lighter than battleship grey. The red on the wheels and pinstriping is from a Dodge Viper. The engine color is similar to, but different from, the stock Ducati color. The forks are anodized a similar color to the exhaust, but I'm not even sure how to describe it (gunmetal?). Here are some other random pics of what it looks like now. You can see that the colors looks different depending on the photo or lighting. Hope it helps.

Wow! Beautiful bike! Makes me wonder if I should have bought a used bike and used the money I saved for paint work / mods
Are those carrozerria wheels on your bike? I hope you don't mind if I steal your paint concept
Don't worry, it'll be a long while before I get there, and I think I live on the opposite side of the country. What kind of exhaust do you have there?

Go for it.
The bike was built to have all sorts of mods/ideas to be ripped off/copied. I mean, Ducati even copied the SS shock/swingarm for the 696/1100 line. I keed, I keed.
The wheels are forged aluminum 10 spoke Marchesinis.
The exhausts are custom made by some guy Duck Stew knows in LA. It took forever to find the right style of exahust for the bike b/c I couldn't find any aftermarket exhausts that I thought worked with the bike. I was super-picky about what I wanted (ask Duck Stew about it and he'll prolly give you a rolly-eyes to describe the billion emails and pictures I sent him on the subject).
Re paint, I'd play around with what you do with the cowl. I didn't want the full number plates on the M1000s because it didn't work with the lines of the bike, and suggested painting the "wings" on the cowl. But number plates looks good on other monsters. Dunno how it would look on the lines of 1100 cowl, frame and exhaust. Play around with photoshop and see. I thought that subtle differences in cowl painting made a big difference in how the bike looks.
Another thing -- as you can tell from my prior post, it was important to me (cuz I fall down constantly) to be able to easily do repairs/touch-ups. Stew dealt with this by using standard, easily reproducible paint colors. Ducpainter or other painters may tell you that this was an unnecessary step and that custom paint would have been just as easy, but I figured it might make my life easier for when I go boom.
