Rob I suspect your bike has done more milage than is shown.  With the starter motor struggling and the noise coming from the sprag bearing the end game is coming up fast. 



not necessarily, my post above yours is from experience with the same issue, and mine croaked at about 15K. i've had it since new so i know the klms are correct, and the reason was as stated above, i never start mine unless it's been on the tender overnight and have had no more issues.

Yes, your point is valid - low battery voltage will accelerate the process.  In Robs case he uses his bike as a daily commuter, the battery voltage and the charging rate checked out ok - I don't know the history of the bike, this is the only time I've seen it.

if you don't ride the bike every day use a battery tender,
any recommendations? i.e. brand, where to you got yours from etc?

most bike shops sell them, mine is an epicycle one, cost me $65 and came with a plug end with two eye lugs already crimped on, my tail hides under the side cover and i flick it out and plug it in when parked up in the garage.
