going to pick one up pretty soon. I bought a trainer kite and used it a little bit then resold it on ebay. I wakeboard alot and I am going to take my wb and change it out to the DK kite bindings (step in style). Im checking out
www.boardlocker.com
for the other stuff and ebay. I think I wanna go with a 13m but I'm not sure. Already bought the harness which does double duty on my hobie cat.
Supposedly there is a big community near barnegat inlet in nj and one in dead horse bay up in nyc.

I've never done it, but am thinking about picking it up. My timing is late, otherwise i could have bought your trainer kite!

Thanks for the tip on Dead Horse Bay. I did some research and it's about 1 1/2 miles from a subway stop so I may check it out one weekend to see if it is doable.

I always wanted to try it. I think Main beach surf shop has a big selection here on the Island. I just can`t pick up any more expensive hobby`s.
I just found this place
http://www.islandriders.us/
If your ever down in the area.
What does it cost to get into it? I have a wakeboard that I could use. I need to stop thinking about this. No more hobbies.

I was thinking I could get away with spending 600 bucks for used kite/lines/bar set up. I spent about 170 on the harness and spreader bar. If I buy new bindings probably another 100 bucks or so. Trying to stay under $1000.

Best I can figure (for new equipment), it about $3K start-up cost. Used would, of course, be cheaper.
Lessons: ~$800 for 8 to 10 hours. Should be enough for a complete noob to get on a board and ride both upwind and downwind
Kite&board&Control Bar:~$1500...
Wetsuit:~$300
Harness:$150
PFD:$100
The schools will let you use their equipment if you take lessons from them, but why spend the $$$ on lessons unless you are going to commit for the rest? Also, the BestKite location will let you rent kite/board/bar for $100 each afternoon.
The two schools near NYC I found are (w/out needing to rent a car):
http://www.bestkiteboarding.com/Best-NYC
http://ny-kiteboard.com/
Post up if you find others...

Thanks for this! It's very close to an LIRR station and very close to the BestKite store/school.
Mookie, are you NYC based? I'm thinking about doing a couple of diligence trips to see if it is feasible to kiteboard via public transport (&taxi).
Here are the locations I've heard of:
1) Camples Memorial Park (via LIRR)
2) Plum Beach (via subway)
3) Some beach on Staten Island (via Ferry &
)
4) Sandy Hook in NJ (via Ferry)
5)

I work down near barngat bay but havn't moved yet (I still live in north jersey). I keep a waverunner and boat in seaside park so I was hoping to attempt it there. Apparently the best wind condition is whats called side offshore, which is slightly blowing out to sea and slightly blowing down shore. Im hoping I can find that there because I could move to either side of the bay depending on the day's conditions.
But yeah, I'm down with trying this out with you guys. Either here or there.
I also bought this dvd
http://www.realkiteboarding.com/index.cfm?page=newsitem&id=856
I got it off of amazon last year, its currently lost somewhere in my house. It does a good job explaining everything and how to get started. 25 bucks on amazon.
I'm
alright
at wakeboarding, can deep water start, jump the wake, ride switch etc. I'm hoping that will supplement lessons because I am a stubborn idiot.

I`ve seen a few guys do it in the Great South Bay in LI out of the Hamptons and Heckscher state park. If I ever got a setup. The bay is about a mile from my house. I know East or West wind is best over here. West is usually calmer so it would probably be better.
Not sure if I can/want to spend that kind of cash to start another hobby. I might be interested in doing it for a day. If there are waves and I have time I`ll go surfing, no waves mt biking, fishing, or wakeboarding (if it is really flat). I doubt I could commit to something like this even though it looks fun.

Damn that is expensive. I think I would just get a used setup and learn on my own. I`ve flown kites like that and can wakeboard. I think I could pick it up by myself with some research.

Airborne,
Where did you fly your trainer kite in Hoboken? I'm thinking about picking up a trainer kite to start practicing.

I used it down in seaside park, but you could easily fly it on Pier A in hoboken if that is close to you.
for the trainer kite, I had something like this
http://greenhatkiteboarding.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=4_1_35&products_id=505
only it was red and I bought it on ebay. I don't see any on there now though.
I still don't know what size kite I should buy. I'm thinking a 12m, I weigh 180lbs.
