Slipper Clutch probs
«
on:
May 31, 2008, 06:07:55 AM »
I installed a "Corse" slipper this spring. The 1st time I took it out & down shifted the balls over extended the ramps & locked my clutch in the disengaged position. I was only a mile or so away from my place so I push her home, took it apart & removed one of the spacer plates. I have driven almost 2000 miles since.
Last night I was existing the freeway & banged it down one gear. I hit a false neutral. The clutch locked up in the disengaged iposition again. I had 2 allen wrenches with me & that premium quality screw driver Ducati gives us. I pulled the pressure plate & push rod off,, & managed to wiggle the basket enough with the screwdriver to have the balls slip back onto the ramps. Threw it back together & proceeded to drive. I put on another 70 plus miles & never had a prob again. I did adjust my clutch lever( I have a Pazzo) so I dont get the full pull.
Is there anything else that can be done?
Thanx
JDS
NOTE: I am using the stock friction & spacer plates (minus one spacer plate)

I am not familiar with that brand name of the slipper but I will take a shot. What plate did you start with when you built your clutch stack? make sure it is correct for a slipper as most do not start out as a stock clutch stack for the very reason you are describing. I believe it needs to start with a friction plate first.
Have you checked with the place where you purchased the slipper to make sure you have the correct one?
Did you make any other modifications at the same time?
Are you sure you have all the parts in the correct order, there is often a finger spring that limits inner basket travel.
Good luck

Its this clutch
http://store.proitalia.com/968317aab.html
I bought it off Ebay.(Brand New. From a Ebayer in Italy. No instructions) The Spider is in. Not sure if the stack height is a issue. I am using the stock plates. When I 1st installed the plates there were 2 steel plates going in 1st, then friction, steel, friction & so on. 3rd or 4th time I down shifted the Balls exceded the ramps. So pushed her home, removed one steel plate at the start.
Now, almost 2000 miles later it did it again.
I pulled it apart yesterday. Everything looked fine. I think I am going to pull it apart again. I will post some Pics. There is one spacer washer that I am not sure of. But I dont think it affects the distance the Basket travels up the ramp. So far adjusting my lever so I dont get as much pull seems to be working,,,,,but,, I am not that confident with this set-up. Makes going for a long cruise kind of a adventure into the unknown.

I would bet you are supposed to start with a friction not a steel. As the inner basket is traveling out the steel plate is falling behind and locking up the clutch.
Double check with the people who sold you the slipper but all the slippers I have installed start with a fiber plate first.
good luck

Some of the slipper clutch setups only work well with convex driven plates
you might have to switch to a "race" clutch pack, or put in a few convex plates.
if the slipper is turning too much and locking, it is due to too much clearance or not enough force holding back the rotation.

4mm Allen screws have been loosened.
The tappered washer that sits on the Spider spring.
Tappered nut, washer & Spider spring. I am pretty sure that these pieces are in correct order.
Hub. Doesnt the 6 pins that the springs sit on limit the travel ? Thats what stops the movement when I am working this thing by hand. !
I may have too install a ffriction plate 1st. Just seems strange that it has only given me grief twice.
Yes,, a plate falling in behind may be the problem. Thanks to whoever suguested that. It may not be the balls over extending the ramp at all. Back to the drawing board
On another note. I calibrated my Friction plates. Not much meat left on these puppies(maybe I am wrong) 2.93 - 2.98 mm of thickness. Those are stock friction plates. Are they within factory spec?
One other note. This clutch is getting very grabby when taking off in 1st gear. Makeing some noise as well. My 996 did the same thing just b4 I had to replace the Fric plates. The bike has just over 2500 miles.

That clutch definitely starts with a friction plate. while you have it apart place a steel plate at the back and ramp the inner hub up on the balls and you will see why.
the stack you have been using could have caused the groan. surface all the metals except the cone shaped plate and reassemble. There is a stack thickness you should be at as well but I cannot think of it off the top of my head.
Was there also a large belville washer under the inner basket as well? everything you had at the outside of the shaft looked fine.
good pictures.

"Stack height" Should the stack be flush with the end of gear teeth on that inner hub ? I do have room for one more plate !
I havent taken it apart yet. I am pretty sure that "Ducvet" hit the nail right on the head with the Friction plate 1st. I think I had tunnel vision on this one. I am probably lucky that it slipped back into place last week when I was out on the road & only had a couple of allen wrenchs & a screwdriver to wiggle this thing back into place.
I am going to have 2 steel plates at the end of this stack butting up againest the pressure plate when I am done. Is that recommended, does it matter where I double up on the steel plates ? I dont think it should. But then again,,, I thought I had a Ramp & ball problem.
Sheeesh. ball problem, lol. The things I could say right now.
Anywho,,,,,,,,,,thanx guys. Greatly appreciated

I do have the proper Beveled washer behind the clutch hub. I am pretty sure of that.
One more question. I just pulled the plates with a magnet. getting sick of retorqueing main clutch bolt.
Upon further inspection of clutch plates I have notice a few things. The numbers "1' or "2" on the friction plates. I have 5 # - 1s & 2 - # 2s. Origially the clutch came with 7 Friction & 9 steel plates. One of the steel plates in slightly thinner in thickness. 7 Fric & 8 steel seemed to fit nicly on the slipper clutch.
I bought this bike used. It had 154 miles on it,, & it had a Billet after market pressure plate. Orig owner may have changed clutch plates.
Here is a Pic of these Fric Plates & one steel plate. All Steel plates are knotched. I have not seen a line up mark on the Slipper Clutch Hub anywhere, I did read on the Surflex or was it another make,,, cant remember,,, but they had a schematic which had steel plate 1st. & a line up mark on clutch hub.
I am pretty sure I asked more than one Question,,,,got carried away with detail. Ooooopps

The notch in the steel plates are just from assembly or machining process as far as know, there is no right spot for the notch.
I do not think I have ever seen (noticed) any friction plates that were numbered. I wonder if that was something someone did after purchacing the bike. Your bike is new enough that it is very possible that ducati has started labeling them. why I do not know as both plated should be the same. I would check the parts fische, but I would bet that you get a clutch set as a set.
the steels that are 2mm thick are flats but I bet if you look closely at the 1.5mm plate you will see it is a cupped plate.. It helps to keep chatter (groaning) to a minnimum

Yes,, it is cupped & 1.5 mm.
If U look close at that last Pic U can see the # 1 or 2 on the tooth tab of the friction plates.
Its assembled & seems to be running fine. But then again it ran fine for most of the time when it was completel ass backwards,,,,lol
Thanx Ducvet. Greatly appreciated.
