I was told it would be $320 ish depending on what they may have to do. The dealer said they usally do all the other servicing when they check valves so they had to make up a number (full service $600). I do all the other easy stuff such as filters, oil ,belt check and what not so it wasnt needed. Does that sound about right, just curious. More importantly what would be a good book to learn how to do it myself?

Thanks,
Eichh

Thanks,

Yep, the Desmo Times 4 valve manual will do the trick. I just used it to do a valve adjustment on my 07 S4RS last week. Great pictures combined with simple directions geared toward the non professional tech are what make his manual worth the price. His manual just like the OEM manual have the old spec for clearances.. If you want to bring everything in to the new spec of .002” for the closers and .005” for the openers you had better bite the bullet and buy a complete shim kit. Even with a shim kit I still had to order a couple of shims.

With the closers and openers dead on spec I was blown away by how much better the engine ran. Throttle response was always good but now it’s ballistic! I don’t know why I  put off doing this for so long..

Desmo Times is also a great place to get the tools you need to do your own valve adjustment too. I stumbled upon the Desmo Times website a couple of years ago and it has become my "1 stop shop" for most of my Ducati needs. LT is also quick to help with your specific tech questions too as long as you use his forum and don't email him directly.  [moto]

The total was $ 328 out by Chicago it needed no adjusting after 6500 miles. Im looking forward to getting this book to see whats actually involved and eliminating that cost of owning what has to be my favorite investment yet.

Did they tell you what the clearances were?

Did they tell you what the clearances were?
...and did they pull the cams to inspect the rockers?

I didn't think of asking. Should they have told me? This was the first time I brought it in for that since I bought it they put new rockers in at that time.

New rockers are no guarantee of having good rockers unfortunately. Did they replace all of them last time? The newest iteration of factory rocker will only fail about 10% of the time.

I think Speeddogs' point is they may be using Ducatis looser spec which will save you money, but not necessarily give you the best running bike.

If you're happy with it then just ignore us. Grin
