Just found out today that my mother-in-law's lung cancer has spread to her liver.  She's been on chemo and radiation for quite some time and had a partial lobectomy a few years ago.  The cancer has been back for a while now but tests she took this week show that the mass in her lungs has increased in size and has spread to her liver and possibly to the lymph nodes surrounding her lungs and heart.

The new mass is in the middle of her liver and the doctors said that surgery to remove it would be too risky.  They mentioned starting her on experimental medicines and something along the lines of "making her comfortable."  Needless to say it was a shitty day.

Final Gifts by Maggie Callanan & Patricia Kelley is an extraordinary book that provides real insight to the dying process.  The authors are hospice nurses and they draw from a great deal of experience in understanding, comforting, and communicating with people as they near death.  I'd urge anyone facing the loss of a loved one to read it.  I lost both of my parents to cancer and I would've missed a lot of what they were communicating if I hadn't read this book.

So sorry to hear about your mother in law adam 3406,my dad is going through the same thing right now,we're doing alternative medicine for this one coz he doesn't want to go through the chemo treatment.Total change of lifestyle for him,we are actually doing herbal therapy,diet totally changed from red meats and what have you to veggies,juices etc...We've seen a lot of positive results from patients like my dad so worth giving a shot.So far he's gaining a bit of his lost energy back little by little.Good luck to us.

I am very sorry to hear that...  both my mother and mother-in-law had tumor removed from their chest/breast area.  Luckily they weren't cancerous...  It was devastating to hear anything with a hint of cancer.  Can't imagine what your family is going thru right now.

keep strong Adam....if for no other reason, than to be a pillar of strength for her! I know this for when my Mom went through breast cancer and is now a survivor for 10 years...her spirit will come to depend on yours to a degree as to how hard she will fight....so don't give up...
