Boys and girls, as I slowly go through my shopping list I have encountered a problem: The exhaust system.

Currently it has the termi slip ons, ecu, and air filter. I now want to get rid of the cat converter and get this thing sounding nice, unfortunately Ducati say that I can not just buy the headers as they are 50mm, and the slip on exhausts are 45mm. I would have to buy the complete system again which has the ecu, air filter and full 50mm system. That package will set me back $4800!!

Um, Mcproblem. Any one have some ideas?? I'm willing to pay for a custom system as that will still be cheaper than the ducati price.....

Easy fix, Fit the new front half and then go to a good exhaust shop and buy an adaptor from 45-50mm, cut the length of this adaptor out of the system & fit the rear half.
Problem solved !
Easy.

It shouldn't be effected as this will not change the overall length of the system.
I can't see the 5 mm smaller diameter of the Termi's being an issue.

Sell the Termi Slip-ons
and go shopping in the US.

Boom tubes
Arrows
MIVV (personal Fav)
Akro (Love it)
 to name a few.

ECU I'd be asking Ozducati/Carbon Imports about that special priced Micro Tech ECU.

IMO Termi's are a bit cliche for a Ducati but then that is just my thoughts.

So they do sell the 50 dia pipe as a separate item then? If so it may still be cheaper to get a custom pipe (you know Ducati prices and all that + the mods required).

Perhaps there is an option for another after market pipe which is sold as a 'cat eliminator' which I would assume is made to suit the stock 45 dia ... but I don't know if that is an option for the S4Rs (I know Spark used to make such a thing for the S2R 800, but that wouldn't help you).

As for the ECU, I have no idea ... but can guess at the advice you would receive from NFI.

Thread jack sort of.
Why: when removing any enviromental element from an exhast system (eg cat converter) on a car resulting in a HUGE fine
does the same on a motorcycle not attract the attention of Mr Police ?

Yep.

Although as far as I know I have never had an 'authority' check the presence or existence of such a device on any of our vehicles.

Just measured everything....

The slip ons are actually 50mm, with the mid pipe being 45mm tapering into 50mm at the connection point. If the slip ons are 50mm, can't i still get a 50mm system that just slides over the connection rather than having a taper point?

...Did that just make sense? Because i confused myself  Huh?

A mate of mine bought the termi slip ons with ECU and filter and mated it up to a Spark midpipe no probs!
He has a 2005 S4R
Hope this gives you some insight

most coppers don't know where the line is drawn for enforcing the cat/emissions issue on bikes, especially when most are hidden internally (yes, i know hugh is a LEO and being a rider he probably does, but most don't.
as for fitting a 50mm header and adapting it to the existing mid pipes, i wouldn't. 5mm can and will make a difference, i know this because my 03 S4R had very restrictive std headers feeding an arrow system. i got pissed off at having to weld these headers constantly because they are poor quality so i fitted a set from a 996 which meant a few mods, the main one being the headers had outside collars for the mid pipe rather than tapering down to fit _IN_ the arrow mid pipe. sure it looked like it would flow freer but i picked up 35 klms before the fuel light came on so it is much more efficient than it was. i still have to reset the co's but it doesn't feel lean, it still behaves properly so it seems i am using less throttle % than before for the same type of riding.

I agree with mattyvas completely, sell the slip on system and buy a full exhaust, i would buy the termi full system though, it comes with the ecu and looks "dead sexy!"

Loony, i re-read my post. I think i did make it confusing....

The connection point that i mentioned is the connection between the mid-pipe and the exhaust. So, if the exhaust is 50mm, could i get the 50mm mid-pipe/headers and just slide it on?

I've seen full systems for sale on Ebay OZ and Trading Post for under $2K - used but in as new condition.

This full Termi system sold for $850US last week http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ducati-Monster-s4r-s4rs-full-Termignoni-Slipon-Exhaust_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45f18be1f1QQitemZ300405219825QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_4248wt_941
