+1 to bgb's post - The performance "downside" is you'll be limited by the grip limitations of the 'crappier' tire.

Additionally, look at race teams, and even race (dare i say) video games that allow you to equip a different compound front and rear for different handling characteristics. soft front/med rear, or hard front/med rear, etc etc.

I'd caution about judging the new tires performance without a matching mate though.
