According to witnesses at the scene, the driver of the sanitation truck was "shuffling with his paperwork" and distracted.

Jalopnik reported that yesterday as well. That is intolerable. This prevailing attitude that driving is easy and you can talk on the phone, or text, or shuffle through papers while operating a vehicle has got to stop. Driving is hard. It requires concentration and awareness. This guy is now a mass murderer through his ineptitude and I hope he's never again allowed to operate a vehicle, even if it's the prison bus.

As a voice from Phoenix, it seems like every year there's a very tragic accident with motorcycles and vehicles. It's absolutely tragic.

I'm at a loss of words...

I've live all over the country, and the worst drivers I've every encountered are in Phoenix.  Add to this a rather large population of MMI students, many with very powerful sportbikes, and I suspect you have a higher than average motorcycle accident occurance.

As a matter of fact, a few weeks after I left a kid I knew (an MMI student) died crashing his bike.

Sad.  All around, very sad.

RIP

This is horrible tragic accident.  Sad to hear this.  Having lived in Phoenix, I always thought that was one dangerous place to ride or even drive.  The speeds and carelessness of the drivers I encountered still astounds me.

This is a terrible, sad story.
I'm always so scared sitting at lights, I nearly got smashed once back when I rode a scooter, the guy screeched up to about 6 inches from my rear tire. ugghhh
Thoughts and best wishes to the families.

Totaled my 04 S4R getting rear ended at a light. Not much you can do to get out of the way even if you know it's happening.
I'm waiting to see what happens to the truck driver.

Yea, sometimes I look around at a stop light to see if people are coming to a halt like they should, but usually?  I just sit mindlessly waiting for the light to change.

And hell yea, as you pull off, best be looking to see if that set of peeps are slowing like they should, or if there's a couple of "important" people who are going to stuff it under the changing light to run your Ducati ass over.

It's a make the beast with two backsing jungle out there!

Must be a helpless feeling to know someone just ran over and killed family and there's nothing you can do about it.  I'm sorry for them.

I have ridden that route several times. My condolences to the families and it sounds like there will probably be some major wrongful death lawsuits. I hope the families own the company after this is all said and done. Even though the families will receive compensation I'm sure, there is no replacing lost family members.  That idiot driving the truck should have been paying F'ing attention! Especially driving something that size that has the capacity to kill several people. He seemed to have no sense of responsbility.  People are idiots out here in Phoenix..

 Cry

Those pictures are sickening

Thoughts to all involved.

This is another reminder to us all to not text and dial, etc. while driving. Unfortunately, this could ( and probably will) happen again.

Very sad
