It puts the billet aluminum on the motorcycle...

« on: April 01, 2010, 03:32:30 AM »

As many of you know, I’ve been itching to get a new bike. The Monster’s getting a bit long in the tooth, and I wanted a bit more power than the Supersport could offer. And the Yamaha is great for commuting, but I’ve always had a longing for something that could handle super long distances. Well, I sold off the Monster two days ago, and that gave me the funds I needed to get a new toy Grin

I’ve had my eye on the 1198s for a while now, but the cost and availability of used examples has been holding me back. And the superbike doesn’t exactly make a good tourer. The thought of sitting on a Duc Superbike for even 3 hours pains me. I guess that plan just wasn't meant to be.

At some point I decided that I needed something capable of 600+ mile days, in comfort, with lots of storage space. The BMW R bikes were high on my list. But after test riding a used R1200GS at MotoJava this past weekend, I found it waaaaaaay too tall for my 30” inseam. After surfing Craigslist for a while, another bike caught my eye…one that fits the bill perfectly. Way comfortable, a ton of potential storage space, low seat height, kick-ass v-twin torque, and a huge tank capacity. So last night I went to Santa Rosa, forked over the cash and bought it without even a test ride. Turns out I made the right choice…as I rode off on my new (to me) '97 Dyna Wide Glide, I realized that this thing is the perfect complement to the sportier bikes:

It started raining again last night, so I was glad to have my one-piece textile suit. I managed to take the damn thing out to Highway 1 for the ride home. The Racetrack isn't quite the same on it, but I did manage to scrape the pegs a few times in the wet. Hell, I think I could probably wheelie this thing too.

This bike came with a bit of a Captain-America type paint job:

I plan to change that soon enough. I'm thinking of blacking it out in matte, sort of the Nightster style. But this bike is plenty blinged out as it is, so no need for more money to dump into it.

I never thought I'd end up on a Harley, but I really do like this thing!

Yeah-he'd never try a bmw if nothing else-too many "pole up the ass" jokes he'd have to make about himself.
