So, putting on some bling today, and remove the dirty looking tank guard sticker. Oh, it was hiding some damage  Cry

It Doesn't look like crash damage, looks more like an error in the clear coat process from new. The whole tank is perfect except for a piece as big as my palm where there is zero clear coat(The white stripe sticker started peeling off with the tank guard sticker)

It doesn't look like there are any cracks underneath the sticker, just a straight out error in manufacturing. I had to put a spare tank guard sticker over it as it looked like shit!

Has anyone come across this on a bike?

Yes mate I have heard of this before where a bloke was selling his S4R and he told me he tried to remove the tanks protector and the clear coat pulled away from the white stripe.

Word of advice. Heat up the protector with a hair dyier to soften the glue before you try to remove.

Hmm, I think that's what has happened. I've had a look at the sticker i removed, and there is no clear coat on it.

I think it has happened when the first owner had it, not the second one(The guy i purchased it off)

Information was obviously not passed on  Roll Eyes

yep, happened on my S4R, the stripe is painted, but the pinstripe and it's gap is a decal. mine was going a little yellow anyway and was a good excuse for a custom respray waytogo

Unfortunately I have done this to my tank aswell , I was toying around with tape on the sides of the tank to check out a few ideas. When I peeled the tape off up through the knee cutouts it peeled the clearcoat off like it was cling wrap , it didnt actually break the clear coat or pull a piece out , it just stretched it and pulled it away from the silver underneath. I had a mark on the side of the tank that has been bugging me anyway so its respray time for me.

I have to make a correction, upon peeling off the sticker today I did take some clear coat off but not the entire thing. Looks like there was already some damage and i have just made it worse....  bang head

For now the new sticker is covering it, but looks like I will be getting a tank spray in the near future.....

Thanks for the quick reply guys, and i'm a little annoyed at the frequency that this appears to happen. Must almost be often enough for Ducati to actually fork the bill for it.....

So Rob, it sounds like you are more than just a pretty face. Grin It was nice meeting you on Sunday.
Your advice here is pretty damn good. My brother is a panel beater and he uses that Blow Dryer trick to remove stickers.
I used this method on an old bike and from personal experience it works a treat!  waytogo
