Sounds a lot like bad luck.  My '01 with 54K miles is still on the original regulator (knocking on wood).  Regulators were a problem on fuel injected single phase Ducs.  Your bike should not be problematic providing you did everything you said.  Ummmm...wait, I re read the whole thread and spotted two problems.  One is I typed 14.2 instead of 14.4 volts, in your case, a mute point.  The other is you said nothing about checking the regulator ground.  The way your regulator works is the diodes rectify the current, in other words, change AC into DC.  Voltage is controlled by shorting the excess to ground.  Check those ground wires carefully.  The yellow wires to your regulator are from your stator.  The red wires charge your battery through the 40 amp fuse.  The black wires are ground.
