^note: in 2004 Ducati started using different measuring which is why the old sheet and the new don't marry well, dry weight was altered and HP was at the crankcase NOT the back wheel, torque was also altered that year
^note: bought a year 2000 catalog and turns out the 900 was IE that year as well. Would love a 2003 catalog!

I'm confused. How'd they get 17 more HP out of 1 cc when they went from the 695 to the 696?

From memory, they're actually same displacement, but a completely new engine design, inc heads and fueling system. the model numbers are always displacement...

Probably a typo. The M695 should be 73HP
The M695 engine was the highest output Vs capacity aircooled 2V ducati motor until the 696 came out.

696 had better designed heads - always happens in the motoring industry - get more HP by better designed heads.

Um.....
So since the model number always reflects the displacement, and since the 696 and 695 both have the same displacement..... is the 695 696cc's or is the 696 695cc's or vice versa? Or are they both 696cc's?? Or.... are they both 695cc's??? Hmm???
I think you mean that the model numbers are always the displacement.... except when they're not. The 696's extra 1cc was marketing-speak I do believe. In fact the bore x stroke (and therefore the capacity) are identical. But you're right about the new head design and the switch to siemens fuelling.

Yah. My manual quotes power as 52 KW (71 HP).
