it's all arbitrary guys. they raise your rates because they can. it's a racket.
my RENTER'S insurance went $60.
I have no more coverage than i did. I haven't moved. Nobody has moved in.
Why then?
Because. That's why.

+1
I have Progressive for my car and my payment went up $50 a month, per car, on last renewal. I've had the same coverage for over 2 years with three cars on the same policy and no accidents or tickets.
The reason they told me.....changes in legislation
The reason I deduced on my own.....friggin bullcrap
Bottom line, there's nothing we can do about rate hikes. The last thing I want to do every year, or 6 months, is call every insurance company looking for a lower rate. Besides, they almost always take a larger "first" payment and I can think of better things to spend that money on than a new insurance policy.

Im with statefarm (Utah) and i pay $92 a month for my Duc, Truck and renter insurance. (I think the break down is - $9 renters, $65 Truck, $18 Duc.)
I have no idea why my insurance is so cheap, but I'm not complaining.

Thanks guys for all the info. and insight.
After reading the first page of this thread I decided to call progressive back to try and reduce my rate further. Well, I was able to bring the price down to $535 year from $900, than $700 yesterday!
I took the DMF member advice and called State farm and than Geico to get a quote, comparing apples to apples, progressive does offer a lot with its coverage.
The best State farm could do is $ 608.52 year with no road side coverage or free accessory coverage, the agent said the rate would be lower if I also included auto and home, which I use AAA.
The winner was Geico! I was quoted $286 year, $23. month,
with road side assistance. for the same coverages as Progressive, minus the $3000 included accessory coverage Progressive included. Geico gives only $500. So I signed up and gave the agent my credit card Number.
Thanks for all the help,
Dan

USAA. No better option if you qualify.

California is known to be a sue happy state along with the high population and cost of living in general, causing rates to be usually higher than most other states.

Crime rate, type of vehicle, value of vehicle, zip code vehicle is stored, credit history, miles driven, coverages selected. Those affect the rate. Lawsuit rate, population, and cost of living don't factor much (if at all) into insurance rates. I raised my coverages to reflect the fact that if my wife totals her car with a like car the property damage cost will likely be over 100K, I pay a bit more but know I'm covered.

i have seen my insurance rates drop every year since i turned 25. and thats with three different companies.
i use state farm for auto and home owners, 'cause they are the only ones who will insure my rottie. but i have always used progressive for my bike...just cant find a better rate anywhere (that i qualify for.)

USAA. No better option if you qualify.
USAA is getting out of the Motorcycle insurance business. They will insure current customers, but aren't taking any new customers. They have raised their rates considerably on their remaining motorcycle customers. Call them and they will admit you can get cheaper rates elsewhere. They will even refer you on to another insurance company like Progressive. They want to keep your auto business though.

The other thing that I wonder when insurance threads come up is, what kind of coverage are you all taking about?
I pay $500 with Geico for:
Bodily Injury Liability $100,000/$300,000 Non Deductible
Property Damage Liability $100,000 Non Deductible
Uninsured Motorist & Underinsured Motorist $30,000/$60,000 Non Deductible
Comprehensive $500 Ded.
Collision $500 Ded.
Unless we are comparing apples to apples (as far as coverage is concerned) then the disparity in rates will always come up.

I have USAA for the house and car but they directed me to Progressive for the bike. I wish that they would have covered that as we have been very happy with them. That being said, my progressive bill dropped from $420 to $285. Midwest here, so I am sure that plays into it a bit.

None of the above is true for California based customers.

I was in Florida at the time. I called because my rates had gone up and that is the story they gave me. Maybe it was just a Florida business decision, but I've heard people in Virginia say the same thing about USAA. You might want to check your rates.

I just went through this rate hike last month! They moved my post though
Anyway, I was with State Farm and when my renewal came......BAM 40% rate increase. I was pissed, same thing perfect driving record no acc. no tickets. I called and they told me sorry that it is what it is. I then called progressive and they gave me a rate that was lower than my original State Farm rate. I signed up with them right away. I then called State Farm to cancel and they panicked. I said it was absurd that they raise my rates like that and if they wanted to keep me with them they would then have to come in much lower than Progressive. 15 minutes later my total insurance for the year is $278.00 for full coverage, uninsured motor, under insured motor, $1000 deduct.
