IIRC, Nuke school is 2 years and is in Orlando.  Did they move it to SC? 

My rating doesn't even exist anymore, so it's possible lots of other things have changed.

If he does not stay in for too long and passes "Nuke School", I may have a job for him when he gets out.

He wants in on the electric side of nuke training but said he'll gladly take whatever they offer up if electronic class seats are taken.

He said that Nuke reenlistment bonuses are currently at 100k and depending on how much he likes the Navy life..... he may stay 

If I understood him correctly.... Basic training is 8 weeks, then he should jump right into Nuke school (which is apparently now in SC), then if all goes well, he'll do officer training. It was my understanding that if he did offfer training prior to nuke school, he'd have to train as an officer in a field in-line with what his college degree is, but if he does officer training after nuke school, he can train to be a nuke related officer, which he says suits him better.


As a side note...... it was very sad to see the lack of parent participation yesterday. There were maybe 6 families there showing support. My sons ship date is not until early February of next year, but everybody else there was going into the Army, and they shipped out a 4am this morning, so it's not like their family was going to get a lot of time with them before they head off to basic.

But officers don't get reenlistment bonuses, right? 

They pay out half up front, then the remainder incrementally on your enlistment anniversary.  When I was in, a lot of guys didn't want to stay in but had so much debt that the re-up bonus convinced them to reenlist. 

Basic can be as long as 10 weeks.  He may spend some time in a holding company waiting to class up.

It was my understanding... officer or no officer, the nuke trained guys/gals are heavily recruited for the private sector, and see'n how the navy spends a bunch of money training them, they'll pay to keep them, if they stay in the same field. He got a signing bonus for enlisting now, and will get that in parts.

There is a good chance that my facts in all of this are 100% wrong...... this is bp afterall
