"I WAS GOING HOW FAST, OFFICER?"

« on: May 01, 2010, 10:02:14 PM »

well, i spent a small fortune on my S4R lately, had the exhaust headers modified, replaced tyres, oil and filter, chain and sprockets (new rear still on the way!) and a new clutch basket and plates. yep, i've been busy, but i'm a little pissed off! i've almost always used genuine clutch plates but there were no alloy plate kits available so i grabbed a surflex clutch pack, steels and friction plate kit. years ago i used a barnett kit and had major trouble getting the pack height correct and it slipped like a bastard, no such worries with the surflex kit, easy to fit, no worries about it slipping, BUT, with an open clutch cover the pack sticks together after a wash and just will not come apart without stripping the clutch or rolling the bike and dropping it into gear, NOT GOOD! now, the open cover has been on for years so i have a habit of starting the bike and letting it run with the clutch pulled so as to fling any moisture out before parking up, i would have thought this would be enough as the genuine plates never did this but no such luck. anyone else have a similar experience???

Do the Surflex plates have a "metallized type of friction material??

If so it could be a corrosion thing binding the drive plates to the driven plates?? Huh?

Just a thought as the stock friction plates (like from my M1000S) aint metallic.

Whenever I wash my bike I whack the stock cover back on!!  waytogo

strangely, no. the SPS plates i've always used have a heavy metallic mix through them and they never stuck at all, these surflex friction plates look "organic?" for want of a better word, and they were definitely stuck! i can't believe i'm the only one to have this issue.

i can't believe i'm the only one to have this issue.

My solution was to have the clutch sealed up at the factory and bathed in oil.

Probably not the solution you are after cheeky

I've never heard of it...
so.. the surflex pack have alloy frictions?

is it sticking on the fingers or the clutch pack material sticking to the steels?

what basket is it?

it's a new alloy basket, you match the friction plate material to the basket, steel plates would chew an alloy basket up very quickly, it doesn't stick the fingers to the basket, rather the friction material is sticking to the steel plates making the pack as one. when you buy a surflex kit you get the friction plates (aluminium or steel backed) and the steels.
open covers are a common mod, i wonder if surflex have changed something in their friction material??

thanks for that, mate, the issue for him seems to be a wrong pack height, the hydraulics needing a bleed or a lever adjustment issue, mine is all about the stack sticking together, aside from that issue my clutch works perfectly. i spoke to bev at eurotwins today and he's going to talk to ian gowanloch who is the importer and see what he says.
thanks for the help though, much appreciated mate.

cool as - the other thing I noticed in that article is that he mentioned about slipper and non slipper plates - I guess they can be easily confused?

cheers
