A Most Magnificent Monster

« on: May 04, 2010, 05:17:26 AM »

Greetings folks!

Girlfriend and I are planning a lighting trip out and back to Roswell NM and I am looking at alternates to the main highways.  Highway 60 from Globe to Show Low to Socorro looks like it might be fun (well, as much fun as you can have in a Mazda station wagon).  Arizona highway dept lists it as being open with no restrictions.

Plan would be to leave LA before sunup, make Globe in the early afternoon, then stop for the night in Show Low.  Any hotel suggestions for Show Low?  Sight along the way?

Thanks!!

Wow - talk about a bonzai run!  waytogo

Going from the 60 to Globe and up to Show Low will take you through Salt River Canyon - nice ride up from Globe - nice views - good places to stop. I'd suggest you stop in the canyon for a break - there's a pull off with a parking lot and a bridge to take in the view.

The 60 in and leaving Phoenix is horrible but coming from LA it probably wont seem too bad. Once you get outside of town though it is pretty nice. You get a little Sonoran desert followed by a canyon on into Globe, very scenic. Between Globe and Show Low, there are some woodsy areas and the ever awesome Salt River Canyon. Great motorcycle road (and maybe Mazda station wagon road as well) and there are a few really nice vistas. No clue about a hotel in Show Low though.

In Show Low, there are a couple decent chain type hotels (Holiday Inn Express, Best Western, etc.).

The Branding Iron was a good steak joint when I ate there about 4 years ago.  Also a decent Mexican place called Licano's never failed to satisfy.
