Longer/Lengthen Sidestand?
«
on:
May 10, 2010, 07:23:02 AM »
Got my tail raised up last night (2001 M900S) thanks to those 30mm risers. Very little problem, and, thanks to my brother, got the wheel put back and aligned (although I haven't ridden it yet due to being late). Love the extra seat height, as I'm 6'4, but now I have ran into a new problem.
My bike already leaned over more than I'd like, and now it scary far over. What are my options for a longer stand?
I have the stock steelie sidestand. I know Cycle Cat used to make a longer one, but they don't seem to anymore. I searched this site for info, but didn't come up with much (other than Cycle Cat).
My brother thought about cutting it and then just welding a bit of steel in there to lengthen. He thought a piece of rebar might work. Anyone tried cutting/welding? If so what did you use? Looks aren't terrible important to me, I will prob just hit it with some paint if i do cut it and add a bit.
I am always partial to saving lots of money and enjoy in the pride of DIY, but I like to know my options as well. Thanks for the help!

the seller is kind of a cockbag, but the kickstand is MONEY.

That stand is for older style mounts, like this:
You'd need to get the associated mount for your 01 if you wanted to try that particular sidestand. It won't work with the mount that is shaped like this:
The cyclecat stand was designed for those particular mounts shown directly above, and not the one shown in the top picture, which is why the linked ebay sale part would have a market when CycleCat was in business.

Please keep me in the loop. I need a longer kickstand. I don't check the forum everyday so sometimes I miss some threads.

Already have the carbon tube here, just waiting on the billet end pieces. I'll prop the bik up, fit the billet, and cut the tube to length, then use this cool adhesive to glue it to the aluminum

Taft,
I would love to see what you have working, kick over a few teaser pics of the end pieces.

Reference longer side-stands, my '03 Monster 1000 S.i.e. does lean over at rather an alarming angle,
so I've acquired another one from fleaBay and plan on making the spare fully adjustable.
I'm thinkin' that the spare leg can be cut at its thinnest & most parellel-sided section, then the lower "foot" part threaded with whichever Metric thread size is appropriate for the diameter at that point. Next, a steel tube can be turned down on the lathe (or bought off-the-shelf), part-threaded internally to match the "foot" part, then the other (plain), end welded over the "upper" stand section. You should end up with the lower "foot" part with a male thread on it - and add a metric nut of the correct size. Screw this threaded 'foot' portion into your downwards-pointing tube, bolt the "new" stand back onto the bike, adjust overall length until you get the right lean angle, then tighten the nut up against the tube to lock it in place. A dab of locktite wouldn't go amiss here either
. One thing we'll have to consider is overall weight after welding, so go easy on any thick-walled material - we don't want a side-stand falling down as we're riding...
If it works, I'll publish pics later.
Ride loud, fit a Stebel,
Autolycus.

Another option would be to add a kickstand plate to the foot of your existing kickstand; my ST2 has one that works well, an aluminum oval about 1/4" thick that attaches with with a countersunk allen screw up into a threaded hole in the kickstand foot. It significantly improves the lean angle of the bike with the tail raised, with the added benefit of giving the kickstand probably 4X the footprint; I stopped carrying a kickstand puck because I wasn't finding any surface short of deep sand (which is not a place for an ST anyway...) that it would sink into. It would be very simple to DIY, and you could choose any thickness of aluminum you want, and shape the foot to fit your fancy - oval, trapezoid, shaped like a duck's foot, whatever. And it's quickly reversible if you or the person down the road who wants to buy your bike prefers the stock ride height or lower.
I didn't find anything identical online, but I'll take some photos of mine this evening. In the meantime, here are some of the myriad (silly expensive) options the BMW crew seems to like - the idea is similar, though the attachment system on most of them looks a tad suspect to me:
http://search.ascycles.com/motorcycle/Side%20Stand%20Foot
Pix of mine:
I'd be very leery of using rebar for a kickstand extension; it's quite strong enough for its intended purpose, but because it's mostly recycled scrap metal you never quite know what's in that two-inch section you picked for your project, or whether you picked the right way to weld that particular little bit.

So, how we doin with side stand extensions? I have a chunk of 3/4" block I use at home, and tote around
a hockey puck with a kick stand coaster glued to it for wrong way leaning parking spots when I don't feel like
turning the bike around, or for the soft stuff.
I like triangleforge's mod above.
Perhaps a typical foot extender could be made thicker as well as larger, everything I see is primarily focused on
larger footprint.
TAftonomos, what happened with yours? was there a learning experience you could share?

Like, Cayman.
I used a piece of Delrin ( off of ebay).
Pretty easy to shape and drill & very strong
