I'm about to do my first oil change for my Monster 696 and was wondering what oil and oil filter to use. Also I'm on a budget so what are some good inexpensive ones?

Thanks

ScottRNelson

Mobil 1 motorcycle oil is what I use.

I use the 20W-50 for the Ducatis but I put this stuff in the Honda:

If you want to be cheaper than that, there are some Castrol products specifically for motorcycles that work well enough.

Hi-Flo filters are the cheapest on the market and a lot of people say they are just as good as OEM and K&Ns.

I look for sales on mobil fully sythentic and pick up a 6pack. good for half the year.

Genuine Ducati oil filters aren't all that expensive and you know that they're the best quality.  I won't even consider anything else to save two or three bucks.

Sometimes the K&N go cheap and I get them then.

I am using the fully synthetic Motul 7100 as my dealer said the so called (labelled) Shell fully synthetic was not really fully synthetic and they won't sell it as such. This backs up the Oil According to George thread. I use the Mobil MX4T when I can find it.

the money you will save buying "budget" items is so minimal its not worth it.  You have a Ducati, its going to cost you more...bottom line. If you cannot afford to own a Ducati trade it for something that takes less maint. just my .02

K&N filters and Shell Rotella Full synthetic from Walmart. If you can run it for 50,000 miles in a diesel you can run it for 2,000 in a Duck. [thumbsup]

$19 @ the local dealer. In my view that's expensive, certainly so if one changes it hot and often. The gripe that dealer filters are needlessly expensive is a valid complaint.

i'm wondering who makes the ducati or oem filters for any car/motorcycle, afterall ducati is in the business of building motorcycles, not making oil filters or air filters.

i would guess that all these car/motorcycle companies farm out their filters and just then slap their name on them.

are we saying that ducati has more experience with making oil filters than k&n? or that k&n has more experience with building ducati pistons than ducati does?

then again who knows, right?

I'm stitching to K&N filters at ~14.00 a filter, and Amsoil, the distibuter here is willing to sell it at wholesale about $8.00 a liter and deliver to my house if I buy a case at a time.  Can't beat that price for oil anywhere, the local shops sell it for 16-19 a liter.

The OEM filter is $21 per, and the mechanics at the shop I deal with use Amsoil in all thier bikes and track bikes so I figure it is good enough for my commuter.

i got my last KN from CA-cycleworks and it cost me $12

i run oil from the dealer but i hear you can run mobile one gold cap
if you can find it in the right weight, you can get it by the gallon at wal-mart

on a side note. I went to the dealer to get some 20-50 and the tech (not the counter guy)
said to run 10-40 or my clutch could drag. no idea what he was talking about but i figured he knows more than
me so thats what i went with

any thoughts?

i was getting 6qts of mobil 1 4T from elite etc for like $70 shipped, but found a 4L jug of Repsol on amazon for like $30 shipped.  and i may start using commonwealth for my filters if OEM are only about $12
