yeah you'd have to pay court costs...you can also write a response letter but I haven't heard about anyone winning that way at the most the fine is reduced

I was travelling home from Waimanalo on H3 a few years back, late at night. It was one of my first times ever on the road. I was travelling behind 3 other cars, all going 60. We came around the bend toward the H1 merge and I got nailed for speeding. When the cop came up to my car, my papers were already in my hand. He took them and disappeared - not a word was spoken. When he returned, he finally spoke: "I got you 60 in a 45 yeah?" Huh? first, when did it turn to 45? Second, is that really how police deal with citizens in Hawaii? Anyhoo, got my ticket, drove home. I went out the next day to scope out the area, saw that it does, in fact, go to 45. Realized that he was clearly siting at the 45 mph sign looking to nab somebody, etc. I wrote the situation out and sent it in with my "guilty with extenuating circumstances" claim - it was dropped entirely.

That said, you probably need a pretty good reason to claim not guilty/extenuating circumsatnces/etc.
