OMG!  I used to go here all the time with the rest of the ER folks in the morning after work when I was at UTMB.  The breakfast burritos are as big as your plate, and delicious.

Wow - when were you in the ER there? I ran the "crisis clinic" in the (then-) new ER for 3 years from 1992 to 1995.

I went to med school at utmb, and that place was fantastic after a long night of, er, studying   ;D
la estacion was great, too.

There was always Sonny's for long nights of, er, studying. I think they had food, but all I remember (and hazily, at that) was beer.

Three UTMB refugees at one fairly niche board?! I never knew! I was at UTMB as an autopsy assistant during college at TAMU, then for medical school from 1984-1988, residency from 1988-1992, and a fellowship 1992-1993, then facultized for 2 years before realizing I'd never really intended to stay there long at all. My wife worked in the Pathology department that whole 11 years.

I wonder if any of us ever met, or know some of the same people?

I was there in 2000 as a respiratory therapist (I had just finished up nursing school at that point but hadn't taken the boards yet).  I always worked ER.  Awesome crew there.   I still keep in touch with some of those folks, but unfortunately a couple of my favorite docs from there have died.   :'(

I'll name a few places I have been to and stuck with me.
Ristorante Ponte Rosso, Via Garibaldi 179, Voghera, (PV) Italy. My uncle owns it, made the Michelin guide and the Gambero Rosso guide several times also won several awards during the years. Uncle Mimmo is a Sommelier, he'll guide you to some good drinking as well.

White House. V. Galileo galilei 29 89048 Siderno (RC). Italy  Awesome pizza and pasta.

The Blue Dahlia Via XX Settembre 33/35, Marina di Gioiosa Jonica, (RC) Italy
located right in front of the beach. I grew up on this place spent many nights there listening to live music and enjoying the ocean breeze.
Pizza, pasta, fish, panini, crepes and anything else the staff from around the world would come up with.

Golosia: Piazza Zaleuco Marina di Gioiosa Ionica (RC) Italy best gelato ever can't wait to sit on the square at 4 am stuffing my face listening to live music just down the street from the beach.

Pizzeria Bianco Phoenix AZ  almost as good as the real deal.

G-spot
Gelato Spot Phoenix AZ another almost as good as the real deal.

La Enoteca, Lucca (LU)  fresh pasta everyday with a large selection of local Tuscan wines

There was a trattoria in Varzi (PV) Italy where I used to go on monday nights to eat their tagliata di manzo, cooked on hot clay shingles covered with fresh arugola and cherry tomatos  [wine]
I cannot remember the name and address of that place.

Bar Italia, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Voghera (PV) Italy best panini, the bread was alway crisp and fresh. Unbelievable selection of cold cuts and cheeses.
And there are so many more I would spend all night typing.

A few local places worth mentioning.

Ristorante Pizzeria Pasquale Rulli  904 Division Street Mishawaka, IN
I had their pizza last night make sure if you ever go get fresh garlic in it. Their pizza is one of the best I ever had in the US

Rocco's, 537 N Street Louis Boulevard South Bend, IN
this place has been open for over 50 years the original owner was a paisano from Gioiosa Jonica. His daughter and son in law run the place now. Second best pizza in My area IMO

Giannetto's 100 N Center St. Mishawaka, IN
Best deep dish pizza ever. Period  I have tried the other guys in Chicago and so forth no one comes even close. Family owned, Papa Vic slaves away in the back making your pizzas you can watch him. Be ready to wait a while on a busy night he's a one man show in the kitchen. But once you get your pizza you'll be happy you waited.

Washington DC/Metro Area

Best BBQ: Rocklands BBQ (really the only place I overeat and don't feel guilty at all. Would be my death-row meal)  ;D
Best Coffee: Peregrine Espresso (I think considered top 3 in the nation, lucky to have it near by)
Best Gelato: Dolcezza (locally grown organic fruits used to make unique flavors everyday)

Sweet, take some photos, hopefully it hasn't changed much.  I was there in 2000.

The 'Fishtail Lodge' in Pokhora is also a place to check out.
