Bought a shovelhead.
So are you selling the Guzzi??
Chain jumped off the rear sprocket on the way to work, fun times!
Looks like I'll be chainging the un-holy trifecta.

Cases are OK, just a broken tooth on the rear sprocket. Happened as I down shifted from 5
th
to 2
nd
when I was on the ramp off the parkway.
Chain must be on its last legs, I had checked and lubed it some time last week and it appeared fine so I didn't tension it. At this point I'll chainge both sprockets and the chain...

last chain and sprocket set I got, I ordered from Rick at MotoCD.com ....he chatted with me about how I was riding and conditions and advised me on which chain would be best from both a usage and a $$$ perspective....and I think it cost me about $210 shipped...
damn, this reminds me...I have to get my chain tool back from a MAD meber I loaned it to.

The chain thread brings up a question that I have had in the past. When I was at the shop getting a helicoil kit installed recently, the shop guy told me that my chain is a bit worn and probably will need to go next season. My question is how does one know when it's truly done for so that you don't have an instance like Massimo just had?

A variety of things can indicate.
Frozen links/Kinks
Stiff sections
Sings of uneven wear - usually due to kinks or stiff sections.
Having to adjust the tension on it a lot more than you had in the past
What else fellas?

reaching the end of your adjustability
teeth on rear sprocket looking like curved sawteeth instead of being symmetrically straight up

Not mine, just an example of a sprocket way past its prime.

1982 (the shovel FXRs were only made for 2 years before they switched to Evo engines)
Going to clean it up and ride it!
First thing off were the wild-west leather saddle bags (had to do that first thing this morning they were bothering me so much).
Then will be the tassels on the levers - wtf are those things for? When I was riding home they kept catching my eye and I was like "what's that?!? oh, them silly tassels", and then the back-rest thing (with ubiquitous born-to-ride eagle logo).
I'll swap the drag pipes for the stock setup that came with the bike (after powder coating them black)
Next will be new bars (the stock ones are weird, position felt like I was offering a tray of snacks to the lord and lady of the manor).
Then paint the tank (it's just primer).
That'll be it, except for some carb tuning which it needs and a bit of cleaning / polishing.
It's only got 20K miles on it and has not been f*&%d with, which is unusual for these bikes. People usually lowered them (thus ruining the Eric Buell-designed handling characteristics), or chopped them up or stole the motors for other projects.
It's heavy bastard, that's for sure.

Thanks. So in other words, I should probably be eyeing my chain regularly for these types of signs. I probably need to be lubing my chain more frequently anyway.

And after lubing the chain, take it for a light ride and then RE-CHECK the tension. I think that's what got me.
