If the 900's carbie, classic fuel pump issue - gravity's helping you with a fullish tank.  Swapping tanks won't help, but swapping fuel pumps will.  For the 750, hope it isn't the same rattle 1098/848's get.

I'm thinking the fuel pump (or lack thereof) is the issue with the 900, but I just want to be sure. Could be something else and the electric system on Italian bikes is capable of more surprises that Houdini! ;)

The 750 is what really concerns me, I'll check the oil level, then take off the covers to see if there's anything obvious... loose nuts anyone? I hadn't started her (all my bikes are ladies btw ... well more like mistresses ... pregnant doges really!) since the Sunday ride so it's possible I've shaken her too much.
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.

mrEnke ....I doubt it is a fuel pump issue, more than likely something in the tank (settlement or something!) I did a set of FCR's on a 900SS that had no fuel pump and it has no issue whatsoever. However, i'd be glad to take a look at it (free of charge,of course! since i took the fuel pump off. I could put it back in for you if you would like to try!). Let me know if/when you could get it to me. As far as rattle on the 750...any idea where its coming from? I though it was actually running quite well.  Shoot me a PM and we'll get you back on the road!

I've done some research and I agree it seems unlikely that it's a fuel pump issue, rather deposits in the tank or vacuum line clogged or both.

I checked the 750 when I got back home today and it looks like the engine is dry of oil (?!?). I'll buy some tomorrow to fill her up and see how much is missing. The noise seems to come from the whole engine, not very loud when I turn on the bike and let it idle but I can hear it as soon as I give it some gas.

I'll put some oil in tomorrow and see what that does to the noise, question is where did all the oil go? The mistery deepens!

Headed to VIR, that is about ~400 on back twisty roads

Due to something unexpected, this Saturday as riding day is out for me. Thank you for the response though, I hope to ride with you sometime in the future.
